Might turn out okay for him and save Gophers a lot of contract payout money. Interesting take from last night in Star Tribune. Little Rick failed at Minnesota but still pretty much in line with the last 20 plus years.
Pitino would win 53% of his games at Minnesota, would beat Louisville in an NCAA tournament game, would be ousted twice in the NCAA tourney when his best player was injured. He would win only 36% of his Big Ten games.
That sounds terrible, unless you consider modern Gophers basketball history.
Dan Monson is a quality basketball coach. He also won 53% of his games, and 38% of his Big Ten games, then fled for better weather and a better chance to win.
Smith at Minnesota won 60% of his games and 43% of his Big Ten games. Haskins won 53% of his games, and 38% in the Big Ten.

The MN job just needs to have a coach to lock down the city. They've had great players leave time and time again.
UCLA has been a bad idea for anyone not named Wooden for a while. I like Cronin as a coach but he may regret that job decision.
New Mexico it seemed had a list of who was likely to be fired, tiered them, and when the top of the list came open, pounced. Good on their part in that they got the coach they wanted.
Always thought Cronin would have been a good fit at Syracuse, Pitt, Maryland. Just doesnt scream West Coast to me.
It's a bad job. You aren't anywhere close to the top sports interest in state. 6 Tournament appearances in 20 years (Best was a 5 seed, lost in round 1), 9 years win over 20 wins, only ranked in the top 10 once in 20 years (YIKES) and 6 conference seasons over .500 (2 in the last 10 years)
Facilities are not great, cold weather... It's not a great job right now. It's why I feel good if it's down to us and Minny for Craig Smith.
I would say its never been a great job. People saying they just need to lock down the twin cities don't understand. The prep stars have never consistently wanted to stay in town. Its like saying DePaul should be good because Chicago. These kids are by in large looking to leave not stay. Look at last years class. Gonzaga got the best player, and he is a monster. Baylor got a good one. Wisconsin. Marquette. The list goes on.
Every coach has tried to lock down the city and the vast majority have failed. While it could definitely lead to long term success, I'm not sure it's a problem a new coach solves all on his own.
A bit of a surprise, finishes 1 game under .500 and 8-11 in conference after 7 straight winning seasons and finishes his Utah career with overall winning records both overall and in conference. Guessing he will not have a hard time finding a new job.
5 seasons since making the NCAA tournament at a P5 school will do that. Especially given things looked to be trending in the wrong direction in general.

No knock against Krystkowiak, but replacing him after 10 seasons was the obvious move from the perspective of both sides. The coach and his boss, athletic director Mark Harlan, each knew without doubt this was the right decision.

Yep, it's overrated by a lot of folks - often, it seems, by ISU fans who underrate ISU's job. Gopher BB is way down the list of popular sports in town. The major pro teams rank higher, and, even at "the U", it comes well after #1 hockey and PJ's FB team. Hasn't had all that much success over time. Is in the B1G, which is nice. As you said, local players aren't lining up to go there - it's an exception when they do.
All in all, it's not that great of a job. Could be a nice one if they get the right coach and a # of these things start to line up.
