MLB: 2014 Chicago Cubs

Theo already came out said that Bryant will not be called up this year. Wants him to have some time in AAA

Which he's already getting now and still has nearly two months left before the minor league season is over. He might not be called up because of financial reasons, but he'll have gotten plenty of time in AAA by September.

Looks like the fun part of this year is over. Going to be a lot of losing from here on out. Kind of sad, but I get it. Hopefully, Rizzo and Castro continue learning.

If the first half was "fun", the second half is going to be brutal. Agree about continued development. Rizzo is coming along nicely. Hit his 19th HR yesterday and his average is at .277 and OBP is .383. He hit 23 HRs last year, hit .233, and OBP was .323. REALLY nice improvement.

Question for someone with a bit more knowledge.

Cubs draft pick Kyle Schwarber is tearing up A ball. He's a big dude if I remember correctly.

Does he stay at Catcher? I read somewhere that he would fit best at DH or 1B is that true?

Cubs need an upgrade at catcher. It would be nice if he could be it.

His numbers at catcher at the single A level are ridiculous when it comes to throwing baserunners out, but it looks like he'll be an outfielder.

Greatest tweet I saw last night went something along the lines of:

"Can Darwin Barney just be a stay at home dad?"

Sounds like Alcantara is going back to Iowa after 2 games.

He's definitely seen more as a 1B or corner outfielder at the ML level, or a DH for an AL club. Just imagine that potential lineup (in a couple years) for a moment.

C: Castillo (or FA/trade acquisition)
1B: Rizzo
2B: Castro
3B: Bryant
SS: Russell
LF: Schwarber
CF: Alcantara
RF: Baez (mostly because of his strong arm, I think he's the one who moves to the outfield)

That'd be one helluva potent offense, and the cool thing would be that every last piece of it came up through our farm system, even if we didn't draft all of them. And for at least a few years, that lineup would be cheap as hell, too. Only Castro and Rizzo would have bigger contracts, due to their production and service time. That frees up all kinds of money for pitching, plus we have a couple good pitching prospects, too. That's how you build a great franchise for the long haul.

LOL. Honestly, I understand the hate for Barney for an offensive standpoint, but he is one of the best defensive players in the league.

Well sure, but you can't have that hole in your lineup in the NL. You already have the pitcher hitting 9th, plug Barney into the 8 hole and all the sudden the opposition only has to pitch to a 7 man lineup.

Kind of like I said earlier in this thread, I would rather have 5-10 more errors a year and 30 more hits then what Barney provides.

Looking at the numbers as I say that.

Darwin Barney 2013 stats:
.208 BA, .993 Fielding %

Darwin Barney 2013 stats w/ 30 more hits, 5 more errors:
.267 BA, .985 Fielding %

Darwin Barney 2013 stats w/ 50 more hits, 15 more errors
.307 BA, .968 Fielding %

He finished 2nd to last in BA among all second basemen with more than 150 at bats, T-1st in Fielding %. Average Fielding % was .980.

So we could take the 30 hits more with 5 more errors and still have an above average defender.

Alcantara tore it up today. 2 runs and 3 RBIs in the cubs 6-4 win over the reds. A home run short of the cycle.
