14 Years Ago Tomorrow

Probably the most exciting game I have been at and that spans a lot of other good games being a season ticket holder dating back to when I was a freshman in 1998. The crowd was in it till the end and helped will that team to pull off what is still probably the biggest upset in program history. I remember getting home late that night and staying up till like 3am combing through all the news stories and social media about that game. I framed the yellow "All In" towel they handed out that game and have it hung right next to the iconic photo that is pretty close to this one

I was in Sioux City for work and couldn't leave until after 5:30 pm and I still had a 3-and-a-half-hour drive home - so I had the pleasure of listening to most of the game with John Walters and Eric Heft. My son, who was still in high school, would call me after every big play until I got home. Told him that if Iowa State kept it within 10 by halftime, then there was a chance for our Cyclones to win this game. He kind of chuckled at me and said, OK, I can see that. Not sure he believed me though. I pulled in the driveway and got in the house just in time to see our Cyclones tie the game. When Woody took it in for the winning touchdown my son said, 'Would you ever believe this could happen?' I said, 'Nope, but there's was always a chance.'

I had tickets and planned to go . . . . then let the wife talk me into going to Cedar Falls to watch her high school team (we were both in mid 40's) play for a state championship (they lost). Listened to game on drive home and got back to our house just as Woody scored.
This could be considered grounds for divorce.

I know I was at my parents that night for early Thanksgiving weekend. Not even sure why we went down on a Friday night that year unless it was specifically to watch the game.

At the game. On the field. Made the cover of the Rag field shot the next day. All time game and there was something "special" in the air at the Jack that night.

Was at the game with a few family members what a unbelievable comeback we all got back to our hotel in Ames and I know it was after 2 o’clock in the morning when the rush finally left the body before I could get to sleep

I was living out west at that time. My buddy came over to watch the game and we got to it quickly with the drinking. The next day went a little something like this when I went outside:

Neighbor: Have a good time last night?

Me all groggy: Oh... yeah, umm sorry about that.

Neighbor: We enjoyed you enjoying the win.

We were living in Tuscaloosa at the time. Went to a play at the university with my wife and her friend. Went to the bar afterwards to watch the last quarter. Jumped up on the bar and sang the Iowa state fight song after the win.

Next day went to the bama game with an ISU t-shirt on. My two buddies and me didn’t pay for a drink all day and well into the night. Never been so drunk in my life. What a weekend.
I remember social media kinda blowing up over some Alabama fans cheering for ISU during the game.

I took a day of vacation so I could drive down from the Twin Cities for the game. Mrs. Velo didn't come with me so I took my mother who was living in Ames at the time. She is in a nursing home and could never go to a game now. We'll alway have that game.

After the game we were watching people rush the field and she asked me if we could go down. So I "rushed" the field with my almost 80 year old mother. :D

I was living in Omaha at the time, had a pretty ****** week and wasn't going to come. My mom (who I had season tickets with at the time) convinces me to make the drive. I miss the first quarter - I was actually on Elwood when the first quarter fumble happened and I could feel the cheering through my car. Easily one of the most special sports nights of my life.

We were there, Section C in those days. You could literally feel the upper deck shaking.

Came home and watched the espn replay thing immediately after.
