••• 2026 Official Chicago Cubs Thread •••

I've been surprised as well, but still only 5 games I guess.

Have to imagine him or Conforto is gone next week when Seiya returns but I assume we'll keep one.
If I look at Cubs roster, the weak spot is a shortstop replacement if Swanson would have an extended IL trip. Sure Hoerner can fill in for 10 days, but wouldn't want Nico at SS for an extended period.

Based on Kingery's recent service at the MLB level, I would hope the Cubs are looking for a solid backup SS.

I disagree. I think Nico is perfect for an extended period at shortstop and think he could be playing there for a lot of teams right now. And Shaw slides into 2nd.

I would have been fine trading him, but it's not like we haven't used/needed him the last season +.

Not directed at you but the Taillon hate is comical at this point. Almost to the Happ levels, but thats a whole other animal haha.
Oh I agree with you completely. We were in a weird spot at that time as were on the fringe of being a buyer or seller and they finally decided to sell but sounded like there was not a deal to be made for Taillon that made sense. He still had 2 years left on a reasonable deal and we had a need for pitching so instead of giving him away for nothing they saw value in keeping him. I don't get why some hate on him, he was probably our best healthy starting pitcher in the playoffs and pitched really well late in the season. Even if he is not at the top of his game you could do a lot worse for a #4 or 5 starter in your rotation. It's a perception issue because some seem to think we signed him to be a top end of the rotation starter which because of injuries or failure to sign or trade for guys to fill those spots he has had to at times by default. This season he's slotted exactly where he should be which is at the bottom end of the rotation.

I don't hate Happ but I have never been a fan of why the FO game him a full no-trade clause when they extended him. He's an above average OF especially for his glove but he's not elite enough to have a no-trade clause IMO. When you pair that with giving another NTC to Suzuki and essentially lock yourself out of 2 corner OF spots you could upgrade at that was just a poor decision by the FO. I've also felt they missed the boat a few times to trade him before they gave him that NTC when he was at his peak value and we could have gotten a decent return for him during some mediocre/bad years.

That is all in the past, both these guys are in the last year of their contracts and are going to be counted on to fill roles this year whether someone likes them or not.

I agree on the NTC for Happ. It wasn't ideal to have him and Seiya both locked in.

And I'm not some Happ fanboy but he is far from top of the list of issues in terms of production the last few years.

Nico played SS before we signed Swanson and he's been his backup on his days off or when hurt so I doubt they are worried about covering SS in an emergency. Like you said Shaw also is capable of playing SS too.

Angels look like a team today that wants to get the hell out of the cold and get back home for their opener.

Even if he’s out of the rotation, I like the Boyd contract because he can easily come out and give 3 competitive, high level innings in October like we saw Rea do. Padres having Michael King in that role was a cheat code.

He bailed us out last year but I still wish we would’ve dumped Taillon 2 deadlines ago. He doesn’t have the stuff to come out of the bullpen and we knew his contract likely wouldnt age gracefully.

Giving Shota the QO was just a disaster of a decision. I’m guessing the FO was under the impression he would decline and he didn’t.
I felt Boyd would have a bounce back. But today and yesterday nave to take the weather in consideration

I would like to know how the Taillon contract hasn't aged gracefully.

And there is no way to call the Shota QO decision a disaster on April 1.
I like Taillon. He is a dog and he is by all accounts a great teammate. He also sported a career worst 4.65 FIP and career low K/9 last year. Last years results were by all metrics lucky. He doesn't sport an above average pitch, he doesn't have elite command, and I would've much rather spent $5M more on a guy like Michael King.

As for Shota, I'll gladly eat crow if I'm wrong, but you don't willingly pay a guy $22M who you don't trust to throw in the postseason.

I just saw Hoerner’s contract has $10 mil deferred between 2040-47. That seems like an odd deferment. Is there an significance to waiting that long?

I would assume he's planning on retiring outside Illinois and California and wants to pay income taxes in Arizona.

sucks about horton.

not sure what CLE was doing on that PCA pop up, but its good to see Amaya do something offensively
