    Woodworkers Thread

Barely qualifies for this thread, but I have this old gutted breadbox radio made by Globe Electric. I could just throw it away but it's still in pretty good shape and kind of a cool piece so I thought I might take a stab at cleaning it up and using it as a box for winter gear - gloves, hats...

    College Football Season Death Pool

C'mon NCAA, just wait a couple more days and dump the bad news on Friday afternoon.

    NFL: 2020 NFL Off-season Thread

Dolpin WRs Albert Wilson and Allen Hurns have both opted out. Buffalo Bills All Pro cornerback Tre'Davious White is reportedly considering opting out. That would be a huge loss for Buffalo. Reports are that the deadline to opt out is tomorrow afternoon.

RECRUITING: Cyclones contact Tamin Lipsey on the first official day of 2022 recruiting

That's pretty much where I landed, too. If they were in the same class maybe it'd be different but a lot can change in a year, and even if Hunter is still there in '22 you're going to be challenged for your spot every season at that level of competition. I take it as a positive, especially if...

RECRUITING: Cyclones contact Tamin Lipsey on the first official day of 2022 recruiting

Does Tyrese Hunter's commitment today impact Lipsey's recruitment at all? I guess if Hunter is as good as advertised he could very well be a one and done and long gone by the time the 2022 season rolls around, but I was just curious what everyone is thinking.

    NFL: 2020 NFL Off-season Thread

I think it speaks to exactly why it's going to be so difficult to pull off football without mass outbreaks. You can't really expect these guys to wear a mask during most of their drills where they're going to be in close contact. But that's going to make them more susceptible. The lengths...

    Ouch, Coach Patterson ...

Congratulations. I've never been quite so tempted to pony up for the cash for access to the Dumb button.

Weird color scheme for South Beach, though. That's a midwest or rust belt look if I've ever seen one.

    Ouch, Coach Patterson ...

I don't think he was either, but that doesn't change the fact that it's a racially charged word. Whatever the intent or context, it's going to cause a strong reaction and there were better ways for him to communicate that the use of the word isn't tolerated at TCU.

    Ouch, Coach Patterson ...

Sure, holding Patterson responsible for using a word that he shouldn't (regardless of context) doesn't absolve the player from misrepresenting what happened. There's no hero in this story - both guys were in the wrong to some degree.

    Ouch, Coach Patterson ...

The right way to make sure it's understood that the n word is not acceptable at TCU is to say the n word? Nah, this was a lapse in judgement on Patterson's part even if he was goaded into it.

    Ouch, Coach Patterson ...

It's an racially charged word and it's asking for trouble no matter what context you're using it. How hard would it have been for him to make his point without saying the actual word? And you may not have a problem with him using it to make his point, but someone else (say, a twenty year old...

    Ouch, Coach Patterson ...

I think the takeaway is that regardless of context, just don't say the word. Ever. It's not a real well-hidden landmine, so just step right over it and save yourself the consequences.

    Ouch, Coach Patterson ...

I think the problem is that he actually dropped the N bomb (allegedly). Even if he's using it within the context of "don't say this word" it's still just a bad look for a middle aged white guy in charge of a program that is mostly made up of young black men to throw it around. Gotta find a...

    Ouch, Coach Patterson ...

Yeah, if that's how it went down I'm a little surprised that he thought it was ok to say the word regardless of the context. The n word should just be off limits, and if he used it then he's earned whatever consequences that follow, if there are any. edit: initially I said the he deserves to...

    Ouch, Coach Patterson ...

That's what I was waiting to see. Who backed the coach and who backed the player will go a long ways towards telling the whole story. If you have a situation like Iowa where so many players and ex-players spoke out that it became impossible to ignore any longer that's one thing. It's another...

Has COVID changed your opinion of paying college athletes?

I think one thing that could be done to help the problem is the NFL changing their rules to allow earlier entry into the draft. Maybe have an advisory board and waiver system that would provide a path to the NFL for those prospects that are ready before three years have passed since their high...

    NFL: 2020 NFL Off-season Thread

It looks to me like there are two factors driving it - the number of opt-outs surprised the league, and there is some concern that agents for some players are using the opt-out as negotiation leverage. But I think their big concern right now is how many players are opting out before they even...

    NFL: 2020 NFL Off-season Thread

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/29589585/broncos-right-tackle-jawuan-james-opt-season Expect a flurry of opt-outs in the next 24 hours if the NFL is successful in making Wednesday the deadline. A lot of players who otherwise might have stayed in wait-and-see mode might choose to err on the...

Has COVID changed your opinion of paying college athletes?

Zero incentive for them to do so right now. College football provides the farm system and it doesn't cost the NFL a dime.
