Typically I don’t answer calls from unknown numbers (or calls from known numbers for that matter).

A few minutes ago an unknown number purportedly originating from Rome, GA called.

I ignored it.

It immediately called again.

I ignored it.

It immediately called again.

I answered, but didn’t say anything.

Eventual a woman speaks. She has an Indian accent. As expected, it is a scammer. She asks about a potentially fraudulent transaction on a credit card I don’t have.

I took a moment, then confirmed I made the transaction.

The phone goes silent for several seconds. She repeats the spiel and I again confirm I made the transaction.

She again goes silent. So I add “I guess your script doesn’t cover that scenario?” (Note: I am a ****).

She then takes a moment before saying something about my wife that I don’t quite get. So I ask her to repeat.

Her mic-drop retort (or rather call-drop retort):

I said our records show you’ve been having fun with your wife for the last several months and still don’t have any children. I guess your script doesn’t cover that.

One time I was visiting my mom and I was waiting for her to get ready to go out for dinner. My cell phone rang from an unknown number so I decided to go ahead and answer as I was just waiting.

Needless to say it was a scammer from offshore with the routine that he was calling from Microsoft and my Windows had reported a problem so I decided to play along.

He told me to get my computer to issue some keystrokes to get a command prompt. So I said I did it and he asked me what I could see. I told him grass and trees. He didn't understand so I said "you told me there was a problem with my Windows and they seem to be working just fine"

So now he gets a bit upset and tells me No, the Windows on your computer. Naturally I reply back that I thought it was odd that he was asking me to do stuff on my computer when he called about my windows so now it made more sense now that I understand he was talking about the windows on the computer.

So again he wants to to open up a command prompt and I am acting all confused. So I am tapping on the table as if I am typing. Now he tells me to issue some series of letters something like this.
A as in apple, B as in boy and C as in cat.

So I am tapping on the table and repeat C (tap) as (tap tap) in (tap tap) cat (tap tap tap)
Now he gets mad when he realizes I actually typed out the whole thing instead of just ABC.
So I asked him why did you tell me to type A as in apple, B as in boy and C as in cat when all you wanted was for me to type ABC?

Needless to say he is pretty frustrated with me and my mom comes in the room and says she is ready. So I tell the guy that I know he is a scammer and I know more than he does because I am the guy you guys call when you don't know what to do.

He said a few expletives and hung up on me

Sex with no pregnancy? Huge win. Take that scammer!

They now have an AI model that can mimic your voice and really cause issues....

It only takes a few seconds
Add this to the list of worries and problems AI could generate. If AI can mimic our voice, and they impersonate your phone number….scary. We’re probably a ways from that, but it seems like it’s coming.

We are not a ways from that. It is being done right now.

The fraudsters need only a few seconds of your voice to have an AI copy. They can spoof your phone number easily.

This isn't future state. It's now. 100%

My favorite response if I answer at all is "I do not understand you" or "I am hard of hearing, please repeat". I keep doing this until.they hang up.

My standing rule is if you’re not in my phone book, I don’t answer. If it’s someone who I actually do business with or needs something, they’ll leave a message.

I did get a scam call once about unpaid court costs, and happened to be with a friend at the time, so I went along with it and at the end told them that I wanted to resolve it, but happened to be standing next to Tom Miller and they could speak with Tom and get it sorted out. I handed the phone to my friend who answered it with “This is Attorney General Miller….” They hung up before he could finish

I answer saying 'yellow'. if they don't reply with a color, they are informed that they didn't pass the test and the call is being terminated. If they do reply with a color, I reply with another color, and we go back and forth until one can't think of a unique color.

****, I absolutely should have thought of that. I’m, uhh, quite familiar with how modelers/non-linear filtering works.

Good news is hearing my voice will be a dead giveaway to anyone who knows me to be very suspicious. I make like 2 calls a year.

If I do answer, which I never do completely sober, I immediately start babbling very rapidly in complete gibberish until they hang up on me.

A couple years ago I got a similar call about credit card theft. I played dumb for about a half hour, he eventually got upset and started yelling expletives like "I'm a scammer mf'er' then hung up.

I tried to call back immediately within about 10 seconds and the number had already been disconnected.
