10 UNWRITTEN RULES OF AN IRISH PUB

They forgot one. Don't tip your waitress or bartender. When we were in Ireland cab drivers and servers do not expect ( in some cases do not want) to be tipped. They feel they should not have to be "bribed" to provide good service.

Not a rule but also be aware when your server brings your food in a pub and they ask if you need anything else, think hard about it. Because you will not see them again. They typically will not come back to your table until you leave.

Irish bars are a blast. My only recommendation for those going to Dublin for the game is stay away from Temple Bar area. It's nothing but French tourists that are really annoying. The Brazen Head is a fun one as it's the oldest pub in Ireland. The crowd was super fun and friendly and they had an Irish band that was fun. Of course they did Country Roads but made it sound Irish. For those of you first-timers in August (I want to go, but wedding is in November and don't have the funds while having to pay off my wedding), make sure you go to the Jameson factory. They have a lot of different varieties you can't find in the US. Guinness factory will also take a selfie of you and print it onto the head of the beer. There are also little casinos on every other street for those of you degenerates like me. Every casino is in a row house and small, but they're fun.

Do you pay right when you order?
 
No, they will bring you a check eventually but they don't stop by on a regular basis like a lot of servers here do. And, the check may not come right away when you are done eating.

Sean's Bar in Athlone is the 'oldest pub in the world'. However, I do see that Brazen Head claims to be 'Dublin's Oldest Pub.' Found that interesting.

In addition to your Jameson recommendation, I'll also throw in Tullamore Dew in there if anyone is traveling west from Dublin (it's halfway to Galway). A lot of free alcohol and also bottles that you can't find here in the states.
 
Do not order a half and half by referring to it as a black and tan.

And do not order Irish car bombs. Witnessed an American do that at bad bobs temple bar, he was dragged out and received a good beat down by security.
 
Jealous of those going. Maybe an obvious one, but try the Guiness, even if you don't like dark beers. For some reason it's different over there. It's WAY better and I like U.S. Guiness. When we went to Scotland/England/Ireland, we were going to try as many local beers as possible. But in the end we just quit that and ordered Guiness every time because it was so good.

Guiness is better the less it has to travel. Getting it straight from the tap at St. James Gate Brewery is really good. They had a really good tour, and a great view of the city from their tasting room.

It was like drinking milk is how remember describing it on a trip in college. Just smooth. I have relatives there that I stayed with. They offered us Budweiser, apparently that was/is the top beer in Ireland?

Years ago someone described to me that drinking Guinness was like drinking chocolate milk.
 
What will happen when you meet an eejit from Kansas?

I’ve never been to Ireland but have been to several other European countries. I love to chat up locals, particularly bartenders and if I feel welcomed I absolutely tip. It might not be expected but it has never been taken as rude or unwanted. It’s only ever been appreciated.
