Remember in math when you would use ax^2 + bx + c to make a curve that fit some data points on a graph? Not enough people understand that that is literally all there is to "AI" (large language models). No comprehension, no reasoning, just curve fitting in 1,000 dimensions.

Yeah, but if we keep relying on computers to do most of the thinking for us wants the difference? We are going to have movies and music generated by AI that will be incredibly popular before we die. Isn't that really freaking weird to think about?
The difference is that the movies and music made by AI are not only, generally speaking, garbage, but the media they generate can only ever be derivative of what humans have already created. The less new idea being generated, the less transformational these models become in the long run.
And yes, that would be freaky. What I'm saying is that I don't think that's going to happen.
I don't know. I already see people sharing poems and lyrics that are AI generated because they like them. Even a script, with enough information, can barf out something that is going to have mass appeal.
In that case I'd ask the question: would those "works" have been shared if they didn't have the novelty of being "written" by an LLM?
I'm sure if you ask her. She's pretty flexible...

I asked Copilot to write a biography of me. I only included my name and where I live. It spit out a totally adequate bio that included my longtime job, my work in radio and on the stage, and connections to my kids’ high school. The language was overly flowery and very “let me consult a thesaurus to sound smart” style, but being able to pull stuff like that off the internet that quickly was both impressive and creepy.
I then asked it to include my (totally imaginary) time as a rodeo clown - and sure enough, it spit out an additional untrue paragraph heralding my entertainment skills as a gift to the community during my unexpected stint as a rodeo clown.
My wife tried ChatGPT to write one for her, and it was similar - although it included a paragraph about an author whose only connection to my wife is sharing her name.
So yeah - AI does some neat stuff, but it also can put out totally inaccurate garbage.

I feel like some elements of Hollywood have been doing this for a while now. A bunch of suits in a boardroom plugging bullet points into A.I. and it spits out some heartless storylines.

It definitely has potential, but anyone who has played against AI in video games has an idea how limited it can be. I also wonder how AI's learning will be messed up by human interaction with it.
If you apply a linear rate of change/advancement it has a while to go. But it is improving at an exponential rate. Also, keep in mind that this is only large language model processing, not AI, or what the public thinks AI to be.
