I know the lights are newer, but why are we going for stage lighting? I don't know why this would not be looked at further, as it is one of the biggest changes to the Hilton Coliseum atmosphere that I can remember. Now you can only see half the student section. If the fans show up why not let them be seen and heard?

Maybe they should just even up the lighting on the end Iowa State is shooting and the end the opponent is shooting. Although it didn't seem to affect Iowa's shots.

What a stupid thread.

this could work

also that way on tv we dont see the opposing team make/miss shots because its pitch black on that end.

I agree. The atmosphere was off the charts. Why did we change it. It don’t look better except when we play crap teams and bad weather nights where people can’t show up

I do agree with this. Watching games on TV now it is actually hard to tell that there is an upper deck in Hilton. It pretty much looks like the ribbon board and then a ceiling. Would be fine if we were a typical school with a sea of empty seats, but we pull good crowds, it would be nice to show that off to the country.

And yes, the product on the floor also needs to improve.

I understand why they wanted the brighter lights for the floor (and first rows where you need to wear a visor), but I prefer the former "golden glow" of Hilton.

Ah yes, please light up the rich blue hairs again. That's what's missing from the atmosphere.

The upper deck lighting during the game has not changed in the 6 years I've been up there.

I look forward to a winter full of this.

TV wants the "stage" lighting. From the perspective of a fan watching on TV, I think it stinks. The lighting, along with the way ESPN/ABC do the game sound (minimal crowd audio) IMO really disconnects the TV fans from what is going on in the arena atmosphere, compared to what it used to be like. That OSU clip above is a great example. In a previous thread here some years ago, I posted some Lakers game clips showing the same thing.

It started with the NBA, when ABC took over from NBC, and ESPN/ABC transitioned their CBB broadcasts to the same style. There used to be quite a bit of discussion about this topic around the InterWebs...

Need new Uniforms it will fix everything. The players will love it!! (pirate emoji)

The new lights were essentially a requirement because of tv. Also, the old lights had become so outdated that they done even make certain parts for them anymore so they became near impossible to maintain. The last year they were in use, they would have to leave them on because they were afraid that if they turned them off, they would never turn back on again.

I don’t disagree that the new lights were needed and they are way more usable, adjustable, energy efficient etc. I just think we should still be lighting up the same fan areas, which I am assuming has to be possible with these new lights.
