Who wrote the marital rights laws in Iowa?

I told him that when he married her. It doesn't change the fact the laws are garbage.
How should it be? If you’re married but buy a house without your wife she has no claim to it?
Ah yes, those garbage laws that allow two people to voluntarily unite in a joint business relationship and and treat them as such until such point that that business relationship is dissolved by a court. So unfair!
Bad move by him. If he knew this thing was going to end in divorce he should've consulted a family law attorney before buying property.
If its a shared assett why isn't her name on the ******* loan? Thats how it should be. Marriage should not be an automatic granting of property rights to each other. Debts dont work the same way. Why do assets?
Because your buddy didn’t put her on the loan, he didn’t think to mention this to the real estate agent or anything? Or like any other human being?
Yeah it is unfair. People get married for things other than monetary reasons.
Im talking about the principle of the matter. How do you think this is the way it should be?
I am confused about how he got a loan without disclosing his marriage.

Yeah, pretty stupid this guy didn’t know some simple marriage laws. Assets are shared until you divorce.
My wife’s sister is going through a divorce. Before her husband was served with the divorce papers, we bought a house for her to rent while the proceedings go on. We also did this so she had a safe place to go as he’s your typical rural abuser. We live half way across the country so my wife’s sister and agent went looking at houses and which ever she likes we bought. Once the divorce finalizes, we’ll sell the house to her. Until then, she’s renting at the cost of the mortgage, insurance, taxes, etc.

Pretty sure he’d get half if the shoe were on the other foot. The law isn’t anti-man, but it sure seems to be anti-moron. That might be your buddy’s real problem.
I imagine there’s a way for him to do it, but it would probably take actual planning.
The good news is I think she's reasonable and wont bust his balls. I personally just dont think in a particular situation like that she should have any right to monetary compensation. I also dont think if she had been living there the whole time he should just be able to throw her out.

I know of two cases locally where there was multiple documented and charged cases of domestic violence… some pretty serious stuff….and the dads are still granted every other weekend. It’s insanity.

Check on the attorney and judge , they can make a huge difference. Had a buddy whose wife filed on him. He had inherited land just a year or two before and was only ever titled in his name. The judge included the land in the asset division (which under Iowa law isn’t supposed to happen with the way he inherited it) and screwed him on several hundred thousands. His attorney didn’t fight it hard enough and my buddy walked away hosed.
