Next CF Bracket Best Iowa Towns/Cities Nomination Thread

Bloomfield really struggled economically after the closing of the Farmers bank in the early 80s, the loss of the bank which was not fully insured caused the town's people living there a lot of finical loss. Way too many are still living in the 1970's thinking, that the Gilfilen clinic is going to come back and that it will once again be the Iowa City hosptals and clinics to the south. They need to embrace the idea that they are a bedroom community of Ottumwa, and you can work there, but live in Bloomfield

They finally fixed up the streets around the square and the sidewalks which was supposed to be done 10 years ago but the former major axed the project which had been passed by the council, and was most likely illegal as hell. Bloomfield is a nice quiet little town, but you are 100 miles from either IC or DM, and with Ottumwa being your closest area for shopping, it's also struggling.
The courthouse is picturesque.

And locally you have the largest Amish community west of the Mississippi. Screenshot_20260630_184902_Maps.jpg

The court house is French style is what they tell you, one of the few inspired by French structures in the state and midwest. Bloomfield is one of the nicer county seat towns in the bottom two tiers of counties. But I am bias after living there for 33 years.

As for the amish, I would say they coexist with the town, more than anything else, neither side loves or hates the other.

I'll take things to do for those who know Strawberry Point, Elkader, McGregor and Marquette. Drive through them on the way to Lansing but only stop at Caseys to pee and Starmont to play for a bit.. Kids are aged 5-9.

Lansing has some cool spots for those in the area. New bridge being built (RIP in peace old Black Hawk bridge) and you can take your car on a ferry across the river. Mt. Hosmer with 2 lookout points over the river. Most backwaters in the Mississippi with great fishing and lots of sandbars, also boat and houseboat rentals. Driftless Center museum and River History museum. Great park and a splash pad. Horsfals is a unique store packed to the max where you can find anything. Fish Days town celebration us a fun weekend with live music and beer at the fire station. Sheps Riverside bar/grill, Safe House pizza/craft beers, Skinny Dip ice cream/burgers/fish. ABNB/VRBO and Red Barn restaurant/campground.

I left Iowa when I was 21 (1999) and last year was the only time I have been back. Went to Clarion and was shocked at how different it is. Had to stop at Pizza Ranch and get some med bread, of course. I spent the weekend in Humboldt. It was way smaller than I remember, but a nice quiet little town. I was driving around and video chatting with my wife, who lives in the Philippines, and I had my camera flipped so she could see the area. She loved all the grass and trees, and that's something that I miss a lot. Then she asked me why people kept waving at me and I told her that's how Iowans are, very friendly.

I have been to Marcus a few times the past several years, mainly just excursion to eat at one of the restaurants my Iowa family frequents. Overall "feel" of the downtown seems good.
Is that the Italian place? Never been but heard great things about it.

Sam's (?) The Chinese place downtown is good along w/fuel the coal fired pizza place. Both Clarion.

Gotcha. I grew up bringing hogs to IBP in the late 90s with my dad. Lots of good memories.
LOL Same. We would haul hogs to IBP early in the morning and then we would get to stop at Hardee's for breakfast. That was a big friggin treat for us!

Can I nominate Clarinda for more than its CW connections?

J. Bruner's is an outstanding restaurant/bar. I could hardly believe that a little place like Clarinda could have something like this.
