Next CF Bracket Best Iowa Towns/Cities Nomination Thread

No. Just no.

Where is it written that we have to have a freaking house on every peaceful and beautiful spot?

It's kind of like the sign mania. Who says there has to be a g.d. plaque on every building constructed prior to 1959 saying "George T. Pizwit Slept Here"?

Ya want housing, go to the city.

Ya want lake, go to the lake...if there's one left by the time the money-grubbers get through with it.
I am looking at it as a way to spark economic activity in an area of the state that could badly use it. Think of all the jobs building homes on the lake would create. You could limit to a few areas, and it wouldn't bother most of the lake. Much like the state resort has little effect on the lake.

I think one challenge is going to be whether to include "towns" like Waukee, Johnston, Altoona, Ankeny, Urbandale, etc. because if you're driving through greater DSM is there really any distinction? I just don't think there is. I couldn't tell you when I've left Johnston and entered Urbandale, or when I've left Pleasant Hill and entered Altoona, or what makes any of them all that different from the others.

Just my .02 cents.

For small towns, Lake View is a pretty nice town.

Nice park, both State and City, nice lake, nice bike trail, appears to have a lot of activities in and around town and on many occasions, including some with vendors and activities, a few decent eateries and watering holes, live music several times a year lake front, new bar with regular live music, etc.

I dont know everything about the town, but I think it would stand up with most towns its size.

I used to travel to quite a few towns around Iowa for my job a few years ago. Here are some that stood out to me:

Marcus
Conrad
Humboldt
Norwalk
Grinnell
Onawa
Rock Rapids

Can't agree with the earlier comment on Centerville. Don't want to spoil a vibe, but Yikes...

Personally I like Ohio's definition system

Town/Township = less than 1600
Village = 1601 to 4999
City = 5000+

So IMO for this, 5000 should be the absolute max threshold but a 1600/2000 threshold would actually make it interesting

Thought this could be a fun interesting one but beyond the population debates and the potential blowblack regardless of how the brackets come out I'm getting Posterology PTSD. Maybe we just only settle for 1 cf bracket this offseason.

Iowa's system is easy to follow, but has nothing to do with population.

Any incorporated community with defined boundaries and a government (mayor + council) is a city. Des Moines is a city. McIntire (pop 119) is a city. Townships are geographic subsets of counties that have almost no governmental power and serve to create more accurate legal descriptions. Unincorporated towns are just names on a map that exist in reality, but from a governmental standpoint are no different than a lone farmhouse in the middle of the country.

We have the State, the County, the City (which can exist in multiple counties) and the Township. All pretty clearly delineated and easy to track. I believe most states west of the Mississippi operate in a similar fashion. I know in Wisconsin you have Towns, Townships, Villages, and Cities and they are all below the county level. Confusing as hell to me.

Bloomfield is underrated
Bloomfield really struggled economically after the closing of the Farmers bank in the early 80s, the loss of the bank which was not fully insured caused the town's people living there a lot of finical loss. Way too many are still living in the 1970's thinking, that the Gilfilen clinic is going to come back and that it will once again be the Iowa City hosptals and clinics to the south. They need to embrace the idea that they are a bedroom community of Ottumwa, and you can work there, but live in Bloomfield

They finally fixed up the streets around the square and the sidewalks which was supposed to be done 10 years ago but the former major axed the project which had been passed by the council, and was most likely illegal as hell. Bloomfield is a nice quiet little town, but you are 100 miles from either IC or DM, and with Ottumwa being your closest area for shopping, it's also struggling.

EVERYONE knows a village is smaller than a town. Ohio blasphemy and ignorance.
