In Memoriam: Ames Business/Restaurants

In hindsight, I regret not stopping at O'Malley & McGee's based on the recommendation here. Their name optically led to confusion about ethnicity and, by extension, quality. It's similar to how Carlos O'Kelly's Mexican restaurant in Cedar Rapids seemed equally odd—hearing about a (Hawkeye sponsor) Mexican establishment with that name was as incongruous as the good Irish pub there that has nearly the same name. Speaking of which, isn't there an Ames law firm with the same name as O'Malley & McGee's?

Uncle Jack's Tacos was another curious name, though there actually was a guy named Jack who was the owner or operator. The West Ames location was part of a small chain.

Carlos O'Kelly's

A Buc-ee's in the Des Moines area would be a total game changer. Hopefully they will be looking to move into Iowa in 28/29 time frame. They have one in Springfield MO, and building one on the Kansas side of KC by the race track and where the Chiefs new stadium will be. They just announced last week they are opening their first in N. Carolina.

Currently they only have 56 stores across 20 states but have announced another 15 to be built.
Gretna Nebraska too

O'Malleys was really quality food. I think they also owned Aunt Maudes.

There's rumors they may put one near the corner of Cameron School Road and George Washington Carver since they are developing that area and a lot of people commute to Ames through that intersection.
If that rumor is true, I'm in trouble. Love me some Kwik Star.

Since we are in a sorta-kinda Casey's thread...
Was willed 90-some shares of Casey's in 90 or 91.
Had it been a cash only inheritance, all would be gone.
Love my long gone Grandpa.

I will be shocked if the DSM metro gets a Buc-ee's.
