Would have probably been a disaster if they hadn't done a few things, but they probably got too easy with the pin placements.
I think the early fog helped keep the greens from drying out too. For US Open standards, players could throw darts at the pins.
They were expecting it to be much windier so they set up the pins in easy spots. The wind didn’t come, and it played really easy for the afternoon pairings.
They were watering the greens throughout the day to slow them down a bit so the wind wouldn't be blowing balls around the putting surface
