USMNT vs Paraguay Gameday Thread - World Cup 2026

This is the version of Poch ball I hate and we aren't good at. Maintaining possession and killing the game off has never been a strength of both the coach and players. Tyler Adams being our only true CDM really exacerbates it.

Rather than have some locations have a hydration break (which some definitely need it, i.e. Mexico) it was decided that every match location would have hydration breaks.
It didn’t break 80 in either Mexican game yesterday. This is a cash grab for commercials all the way. They’ve had hydration breaks before that were weather dependent and I don’t understand why they can’t do that now.

Does the hydration break genuinely have pure intentions or is it a chance to make money on commercials?

The fact it is sponsored is all you need to know. My bigger gripe is that they know it is a 3:00 break but they try to squeeze 3:30 worth of commercials. In all 4 games so far they return with play already started every time.

FIFA said all games will have hydration breaks to make it even. But I’d say the TV partners demanded it.

It’s like hockey. It used to be that there was a 20:00 pretty much continuous period with commercials during breaks. Now, you have commercial breaks planned in. It has changed the game as you don’t need that 4th line to get so many minutes because your top line gets more rest. Soccer will be the same if they continue this. Fatigue is a major part of the game. Hydration breaks change strategy with guys getting more rest time.

Does this happen in any other high level competition? I don't watch a lot but I can't think of any instances.
I don't watch a lot either outside of the World Cup and the Olympics. I was just relaying what they said in the first half as to why there was a break in a game that didn't seem to need it.

Let’s see a lot of backups for Australia. With the diffeeential in this game, the next match doesn’t matter for winning the group. Gotta be fit and without yellow accumulation suspensions headed into that final match.

I think specifically because of the heat and humidity in US and Mexico summers they've instituted it across the board, even if played indoors or in a climate not necessarily necessary (like I can't imagine it would be needed in Seattle, either).

And yes, I do understand the ad revenue aspect of it as well.
