Anybody else ever have this happen? I got an alert on my phone that a charge against my account for over $4,000 had been denied. So I called my bank to make sure it wasn't some sort of scam to get my account number, and sure enough, they had stopped a payment in that amount. So I had to go through the painful process of getting rid of the old card and getting a new one. You just don't realize how many things you pay for automatically online with your card until you have to go through this.

yeah it's happened to me.

They'll just send you a new card, same card number but a different CV code.

Last time I had to do this with Veridian, they said everything had to change. Someone in Florida used a couple grand on what I assume were gift cards. Veridian had the money back in my account by the next morning.

But yes, it's a complete pain in the ass. I also had to change full on bank accounts when my employer got hacked as well. I had the same account numbers since my Kirby Kangaroo John Deere CCU account when I was like 8. There would just be random automatic charges posted to the old account that I forgot to switch over with an associated overdraft fee.

This is why I run everything through a credit card. That number is all over the internet for all the purchases and subscriptions. If it is a debit card number and the fraud charge goes through that money is gone from your bank account instantly. If the fraud is on a credit card it is the card company's money that is gone. The bank and card company will get it sorted eventually, but if it takes a little while to get cash back to your account from a debit hack you could find yourself without the cash on hand that you needed to pay another bill.

That sucks. I’ve always been advised to not use debit cards at anywhere but an ATM. If your money gets stolen from your bank account, it’s a lot harder to get back than if a charge is made to a credit card. Glad it seems they caught it before it got to that point. Maybe wouldn’t have if they used smaller amounts.

My bank provided a new 16 digit number that I could load into Apple wallet and use right away before the physical card was delivered.

Credit card is the way to go. Put everything on it and earn some cash back or miles. Just pay it off every month and it's no problem. Also good for your credit rating.

Yep, when we go out of the country on a cruise or traveling around the US, it's CC only, debt cards stay at home. They are just used here in the state.

Guys i just found this debit card. Tried to donate $4k to We Will but it didnt go through. person that lost it must be poor AF
The money was there, but I have a $2,500 spending cap per day unless I call in advance to tell them I'll need the cap raised.

I went through this like a year ago.

I never use my bank debit card except for cash from ATM's, since one of the local small-town banks told me that I was responsible if any money was stolen from the debit card on my account. They also said that they had had lots of trouble with fraudulent purchases from Marshall's and TJ Maxx, and that they were not equipped to police purchases the way major credit cards do.

I guess I thought chips were supposed to stop all this fraud. Silly me. That said, haven't had a credit card alert in several years.

Speaking of fraud, NEVER purchase trip insurance from AON. Never. We were told the insurance would cover for any reason. Nope. No matter that our flights were cancelled and so delayed that we missed connections not once but for two days straight. But noooo, that's not their problemo. Not that nor the money we had pre-paid on a tour. Seems that fraud is quite the business model these days, across the entire country.

Our bank only allows a $500 dollar a day limit on our debt card, if you need to go over you have to call them before. I asked about getting our raised up to even $750 and was told no, it's a security feature. Only hit the limit once or twice, anything over that amount we use the CC.

My wife left her wallet in a cab in Mexico. Contacted the company and they found and returned it the next morning. What a relief! Lol
A couple weeks later, charges began appearing from expensive Washington DC shops! Bank notified us right away and we didn't pay anything. Credit card.

I had someone call me claiming they were my bank detecting fraud. They sounded very official even asked the same security questions as my bank.

They were actually using my information to push a password to them so they could take control of my account. I felt like something just wasn't right so I called the bank right after and they confirmed they never called me. Had to get new everything. Not a card, a new account number. The whole nine yards. To make it even more fun I was traveling for work in DC at the time. Luckily they didn't get any money before I called and had the account put on hold.
