20 Ribeyes for $40 Scam

I was at the Waterloo Menards today around 11 this morning and they were selling them in the parking lot. The line was 30-40 people deep waiting. Crazy

Hey mom, why didn’t you get fareway meat this time?
Fareway didn’t have coupons for ribeyes , but Oreillys did. Your father is looking for the NAPA ad to see their price.

I've thought about doing this before but when I looked up cost of energy to run a deep freezer + cost of the freezer the savings were pretty minimal over the course of a year opposed to just buying 5-6 lbs of beef when it's on sale once a month. I suppose if you continue to do it year after year and your household consumes a lot of beef it makes more sense.
It's not significantly cheaper but it's convenient. We haven't for a couple years but used to split a full cow 4 ways with family. Nice to directly support the farmer and always have beef ready for anything from a stew to a good steak.

I'm not rushing out to buy meat out of a semi-truck, but a little perspective: I was in Peace Corps -Afghanistan in 72 and 73. Animals were butchered early in the day and hung on hooks out in the open air in the meat market area of the bazaar. Usually it was sheep, some water buffalo, camel, and an occasional cow - maybe a burro now and then. If one walked through the market during the day, the carcasses were likely covered top to bottom in flies. No health inspectors, carcass graders or any other consumer protection. Everything went into the pressure cooker. I had no problem with the meat I consumed, but watch out for untreated water!

5-6 pounds A MONTH?

Good lord. My family gets a 1/2 beef every 6 months. It don’t think it saves us much, if any, money any more, but we eat better and healthier because of it.

And once we have a freezer stocked of beef, no one wants a dry ass chicken breast.
