TJ signs 10 year extension

I'll agree on your point. So the "10 years" is meaningless too if the buyout details are irrelevant and TJ is gonna leave if he wants to leave?
Right. He will never complete this contract. If he goes to the Sweet 16 next year, there will be another new renegotiated contract. If they win a national title they will negotiate another one.

Folks say in 5 years this deal will be a bargain, but it definitely won't. If he is still a Top 10 coach in 5 years then in 5 years he will have a contract that shows that value.

What is the opposite buyout. What if he bombs the next 3 years? I can't imagine he will, but what is the cost to fire him if he just plain sucks?

What is KSU actually paying to get rid of Tang?

It’s reasonable asymmetry. There’s a lot more certainty in TJ finding another offer for $60 million than there is certainty in ISUMBB finding another TJ. The expected value, cost per expected win, is fair.

Alternative is go cheap instead, let TJ walk because we won’t guarantee $60 million . Our costs are lower with some $2 million flyer on a coach, but so is win probability

If he’s still top 10 coach in 5 years, let alone a national title, and we renegotiate, it’ll be worth it given the revenue implications of being that good.

The reporting is that the $60m is fully guaranteed. The contract essentially makes TJ unfireable for the majority of the contract term.

To the other point, a long term deal like this is usually less frequently extended than a more common 5 year deal. Yes he will probably get an extension in 4 to 5 years if things continue to go like they have or sooner if we do something like go to a Final 4.

This is a major commitment to TJ by both the athletic department and the University.

All fair arguments....but fact remains, I doubt you can find many (if any) P4 schools with a basketball coach making double the football coach. Some schools where the MBB coach makes more? Sure...double? Doubt it. New coach or not.
I'm perfectly fine with TJ's salary if you want to give CJR a pay bump before he ever coaches a game cut him a check, I'm guessing he would ask you to put it in NIL. He knew what the salary offer was when he accepted the job and was fine with it. None of our coaches are living in the poor house especially when you take in the COL.

I saw a blurb where Tang is headed back to Baylor as Assoc HC? No idea how the KSU settlement came out.

That would be a dreadful contract but Jamie doesn’t have any leverage in this case.

I am sure it is guaranteed. I am 100% sure that it will not last 10 years. If it isn't modified 2 years from now I will buy stunned. If it hasn't been modified in 5 years, then that will mean we are in an absolutely horrible stretch of basketball .

Even if we just tread water for 5 years (3 sweet 16s and nothing better, there is NO WAY TJ will be earning $6M a year.

Honestly I'm not too worried about the low/unchanged buyout. He's proven that he has no interest in leaving and the duration of the contract affirms his commitment imo. The last time a 10 year contract was given to a coach was Ben Jacobson in 2010, so the longevity means something in my eyes. Sounds like he has the financial backing for recruiting and the new president seems to be very supportive, which is huge. so he will be here as long as he's happy and feels supported by the administration.

That's fine, but you have to get TJ to agree to the buyout. "Hey I know you've told me over and over that you aren't going anywhere, and you've passed up some of the biggest jobs in the country to stay, but I don't trust you, so we added a $10M buyout to the contract, is that ok?"
Well, I’m glad you’re not doing the negotiation. Nobody is going to say that. Jesus.

Definitely still low. Doesn't make much of a difference in "keeping TJ" really, but it does make a difference in our bank accounts. Expensive buyouts still find their way back to the university.
Exactly. And what people don’t realize is, besides having to buyout your next coach, the school also has to find the funds to pay the leaving coach’s deferred comp and other benefits/incentives that are built into a compensation agreement. People would be shocked to know what Campbell leaving actually cost ISU. The $2 million didn’t come anywhere close to making us whole.

TJ is not Campbell and why would he want to be.

This contract mirrors how Pollard has previously operated. The coach is taking (probably significantly) less annual salary than he could get elsewhere. ISU offsets that by:

1. Giving more years/guaranteed $, and protects itself by paying monthly instead of a lump sum. The bet here is that, even if something goes horribly wrong and you have to fire the coach, the buyout is further mitigated by the salary of wherever coach works next, and salaries are continuing to go up.

2. Lower buyout. Coach is taking less now knowing that if/when it’s time to move on, they’ll be able to do it more easily. This was the case with Campbell, as well as the NBA provision in Hoiberg’s contract. It also protects the coach with all the uncertainty around realignment and NIL. The interesting thing here is that they removed the reduced buyout for Pollard leaving. Not sure how many years Jamie has left, but this offers some protection for his successor.

Keeping Otz is a huge win, and I don’t really see any major surprises in the contract. It seems like Dr. Cook is as-advertised in supporting athletics, and that’s also great news.

and the president. don't forget doc cook

let doc cook, cook
That is the difference maker. I saw a mini documentary on North Dakota State and their athletic department. Current president Dr. Cook was the president of NDSU. The documentary points out how beneficial having a championship level athletic program is to the over all health of the university. The documentary focused on the monster football program that NDSU has.

The stars aligned just right for the Dr. Cook, Jamie Pollard, and TJ Otzelberger merger to happen.
