It was the same day the Pope visited Des Moines. I still have my ticket stub.
Oddly enough, I saw Luke Combs open for Blackberry Smoke at First Ave in MSP in 2015. Blackberry Smoke is an independent southern rock band and my personal favorite. They do shows at venues like Val Air with 1-2k in the crowd.
It’s kind of funny how Luke Combs opened for this lesser known band and is now this big name. Their styles could not be more different.
Not to get off topic but my dad still has his ticket stub from Buddy Holly, big bopper and Richie valens from that last show
Hootie and the Blowfish opened for Big Head Todd and the Monsters at CY Stephens and then sold-out Hilton less than a year later.
September 2, 1972 Hilton Coliseum --- The Dobbie Brothers opened for Mason Profitt -- this was about 6 months before The Doobie Brothers exploded on the music scene. The best part was the concert was free..Oct of 1991... CY Stephens... I saw the Smashing Pumpkins and Pearl Jam open up for RHCP... beat that!!
I went to see Natasha Bedingfield in St Louis a number of years ago. She was opening for a 90's boy band doing a reunion tour. Natasha was already as big as she was going to get. But there was someone who came on before Natasha--crazy hair, crazy makeup, crazy outfit.... you might have heard of her.

I saw Primus open for U2 at Jack Trice just as they were breaking through. The “Primus sucks” chants were scattered around the stadium.
Years later, Primus opened for Rush in KC! Geddy and Les are friends and talk bass all the time.

Came here to drop this same concert. When they, Hootie, came back a year later they had Edwin McCain open for them.
Yeah I remember the Pope at Living History Farms that day. Just turned 16 year old me, was terrified of the traffic in Des Moines.
The Wallflowers opened for Blues Traveler at CY, once upon a time. And I still love both of them.
Saw Goo Goo Dolls open for REM back in the late 80s.

My first show at Red Rocks had Big Head Todd as the headliner. First act on stage that night was Dave Matthews followed by Los Lobos
Biggest one I saw in person. Duran Duran opened for Blondie at the 5 Seasons Center in Cedar Rapids. They had just released their first album.
I thought they sucked.
