Psychological advantages/disadvantages for ISU vs Tennessee

Michigan has known they'd be in Chicago for two months now so I'd expect at least 60% of the people in the arena to be UM fans rooting for Tennessee. Hopefully with the late tip, a lot of Michigan's fans don't stick around the whole time.

Now if Sunday is Bama and ISU... Look out.
If its Bama vs ISU, I could see a ton of fans making that drive over to snatch up cheap(er) tickets from Mich fans. Also, the game will be Sunday afternoon, so wouldn’t even need to get a hotel room.

I think Iowa State's biggest psychological advantage is in the mindset of the team.

We start out 0/11 from 3? Keep playing our game.

The other team gets several weird bounces or wild plays that somehow end with wide open 3's? Keep playing our game.

There's no question that every guy out there fully believes in what they are doing.

I'm kind of banking on this being the case. Just get the cheapest in the door ticket and relocate where the Michigan vans vacate.

I think the tough part for Tennessee as far as the scouting goes is that without Jefferson we have become a little more multiple as far as what we are trying to do. This is by no means a knock on JJ or me saying we are better without him. With JJ in the lineup there is a TON of film and the blueprint is much more predictable IMO.
We are much better in the half court when our guards are the ones who penetrate the defense vs. letting JJ try to do so. I do think we will miss JJ's rebounding and his ability to post up if he is unable to go against TN.

On one hand i could see neutral fans rooting for the perceived underdog by seed. On the other hand, I could see big 10 fans pulling for ISU over the SEC school

I was going to say this. I doubt the Michigan fans that do stick around are going to be passionately rooting for deep-pocketed Tennessee.

They’re probably viewing it like we were viewing UVa vs Tennessee. Like tomato - tomahto on who they play. And they may actually favor ISU due to the SEC factor.

Michigan fans are like Kansas fans x10 when it comes to elitism. How many are even going to stick around for the late game? While some will, I don't think they'll have a rooting interest, as they'd be favored against either team, and informed fans will know Iowa State isn't at full strength

Watching UT vs Virginia, I thought they looked athletic and talented but inexperienced and undisciplined. I think if we're on our game, we can turn them over and leave them wondering what hit them a lot like Kentucky.

Unless Tennessee players are shoveling deep dish pizza in their mouths all day, I don't see how a late start time is a benefit to anyone. About any college kid I've know doesn't start their weekend until 9-10PM

I'm 100% holding off for a potential MU loss. If that would happen I will def be there.

They're going to have more film on what we try to do without Jefferson, and they're a really good defensive team too, so I think we'll have to add some new twists to our offense.
Personally, I was a big fan of the offensive twist TJ implemented fairly late into that game yesterday...

The one where we don't miss all our threes.

Was watching the UT-VA game and looks like Volunteer coach Rick Barnes looked liked a ghost!! Eyes sunk in the back if his face and dark circle around his eyes.

I was curious so I compiled the stats of our guys through 2 games

Momcilovic: 37 pts, 9 rebs, 3 assists, 2 steals
Toure: 35 pts, 15 rebs, 7 assists, 3 steals
Heise: 34 pts, 6 rebs, 6 assists, 1 steal
Lipsey: 29 pts, 5 rebs, 12 assists, 8 steals
Buchanan: 20 pts, 15 rebs, 10 assists, 5 steals
Batemon: 11 pts, 2 rebs, 0 assists, 0 steals
Pleta: 10 pts, 5 rebs, 2 assists, 0 steals
Nelson: 10 pts, 2 rebs, 1 assist, 1 steal
Jefferson: 2 pts, 1 reb, 0 assists, 0 steals

Momcilovic and Heise have been our constants as far as scoring, with Toure and Lipsey each having one huge game. Buchanan has almost stepped into the Jefferson role as far as passing out top with a really impressive line in both games.

Overall, everyone is contributing something toward filling the void with Jefferson out, and we're still going to be a hard scout in determining who to try to stop (other than Milan as he's obvious).

I feel great about how our team can defend them and turn them over, but it will take a special effort on the defensive boards or they will be a tough out. They beat Houston, so they're capable of beating a tough team and they've got a great coach.

I like our chances, but it's March, anything can happen. The statistical comparison is interesting.

Our guards’ scrappiness will help on the defensive rebounding side. But you don’t have to worry about rebounding if you turn them over first

Tennessee is 6-10 in Q1 games and that’s playing in the S(hit)EC, which was overrated all season and it’s been proven by their poor play in this tournament.

We got this.
overrated? They got 4 teams to the sweet 16.

I agree, as I posted above, Toure has been huge in that regard, Heise seems like he should have double what he does, but probably because he has a knack for getting the ones we really, really need and Tamin is almost always good for a few tip outs to other guys.

O come now. Using sweet 16 berths alone is a risky proposition-- advancement can be heavily dependent on matchups and specific game events rather than overall conference strength.

I dont know that the SEC was overrated, but looking only at the composition of the sweet 16 is pretty crude given advanced metrics.
