Interesting. I don't remember him being THAT pointed about blaming the refs for not being able to run an offense during his time with us...

The most he ever said about the refs at ISU was after that garage call with Aaron Craft. He basically said "unfortunately we didn't get the call we thought we were going to get"

I tuned into the second half and was a little surprised at how frustrated/angry he appeared with the refs at times. Seemed out of character related to his demeanor here.

Fred being a parent/coach for this team probably makes him invested emotionally a little different than he was for past teams of his. I also think he is more comfortable speaking up about things like this now than he was early on.

Fred will **** a brick if he ever plays one of TJ's teams.
Fred is a great offensive mind and already this season has beaten MSU (#2 rated defense nationally, ahead of ours), and also Illinois, a top 25 defense. They barely lost to the #1 defense Michigan just a few days ago. Knowing Fred coached teams, including his here, he will not sh*t a brick going against good defense.

Playing Illinois in the Sweet 16 a few years ago, their defensive scheme isn't elite but they absolutely rely on holding and grabbing. Much, much more than we do. We do foul a lot, but not from jersey grabs and sh*t like that.

Momcilovic gets bear hugged half the game. Can't wait to see how much Houston gets away with when we play them.
Be ready Hilton boo birds and super fans. It's your time to shine and let the refs know when Houston comes to town.... Let's get a few cheap free throws for Momcilovic.

It will happen, and our educated fans calling it out and talking to the refs in those moments of relative silence is one of the things that makes Hilton special. I love that about our fanbase. Other fans ***** about Hilton, but the psychology of letting the refs know they've made a mistake is seriously helpful and our fans do it pretty well.

Just wish they'd show more replays these days on Hilton like they used to. Come on Hilton video board people. The replays showing the missed foul and the fans letting the refs know (and the refs feeling the pressure that they made the mistake) is one of the underappreciated aspects of home court advantage.

I also think he likes his guys more. Less to manage off the court for a lot of those guys.

You must remember a different team than me. In his time as coach here, Hoiberg's teams always struggled majorly against strong/physical defense and teams that intentionally slowed the pace to limit offensive possessions. Everyone at the time said exactly what he is saying in this interview - his entire offense relies on finesse and free movement. When that is impeded, the whole game plan falls apart. Back then, he was on the downward trend as college defenses started to adjust to his offense and other teams copied his blueprint and started snapping up transfers which caused his recruiting to suffer. He was embarrassed in his last game as a Cyclone by a slow pace, defense-oriented mid major team. Had Hoiberg been here during the later Prohm and early Otzelberger years he would have struggled because the entire sport of college basketball had shifted toward physical defense, but especially the B12. The sport is shifting away from that a bit and he's doing better now.

I don't know how his teams play these days as I'm not a fan of the Huskers - clearly things are going well over there because they're winning a lot this year. But from those comments, I doubt he's changed much.

Nah, he's just a Husker now.

Yeah, it wasn't just Milan in this K State game. There were a lot of blatant holds right out in the open court like when Toure was trying to get open for the inbounds 80 feet from the basket and the guy was facing him and had a hold of both arms as Toure tried to pull away. There was a lot of grabbing by KSU not getting called. But a TJ team doesn't want to call that out too much because they hope the game is called (or not called) like that both ways since ISU is almost always the more physical team on the court.

I don't think Fred is using it as an excuse so much as trying to put it out there in hopes the refs will call it tighter in the games to come. I think there is benefit in coaches getting after the refs during games, especially on non-calls. It puts the idea in the refs' heads and might lead to getting a call to go your way later in the game.
