Randy Peterson is back with a new column taking a hard look at the transfer portal chaos and why the real madness might just be getting started.

Enjoy!

Let's also blame the greedy, money seeking agents that call these young players and sell them on the idea they can get them money and playing time. These agents don't give a d*mn about the players, they are just looking to cash in and get a quick buck

Exactly. And probably hedging on the chance a kid does make it big, to be in on that....but if the kid flops out they still got paid

I’m not impressed by the article. The courts have basically said that the NCAAdoesnt really have the power to restrict players, so how does he want them to pass these restrictions?

Also, spare me the “unplanned” and “unintended” consequences spiel about NIL. It was very clear that it would be pay to play and bribing players to go to your school.

This article is just dumb. It's the courts, not the NCAA. The NCAA tried to keep order but were told by the courts that they legally could not. It is now up to Congress to fix this mess.

Until then, chaos is the order of the day (pun intended).

I think I am with you here. What did we expect when it was determined that it was time for the players to 'get paid'.

Well, they are getting paid and this is what a market looks like to determine who gets paid what.

Any attempt to regulate the market is just going to be a new version of what we had before.

The truth about markets is the market cannot be avoided. You can try to control and regulate it but all that will do is make it less efficient which benefits those in power and those with the most money.

I don't know which is worse, the wide open chaos we have now or the regulated system the NCAA had and willingness to let programs that wanted to cheat. I guess the new system is better for the players, at least for the short term.

Should have just paid each player the same when this first started and we could have still had college sports. Now it's just the G league for the NFL and college athletics is over. It was a fun ride while it lasted. Toothpaste is not going back in that tube now.

Not just the NCAA. State legislatures and courts are now involved turning the NCAA rules upside down.

You have to go a ways back to blame the NCAA.

Like quite a few have said the NCAA was b*tch slapped by the courts at every turn and because of it, the NCAA is a completely toothless organization that really only runs a basketball tournament every March/April.

If we are to blame the NCAA, the rests in ancient history now, because yes, they absolutely could have made concessions along the way instead of holding on so steadfast to the amateurism/"student athlete" model.

But now? They're neutered to the degree they are incapable of doing anything without taking more court losses.

The blame that the NCAA and its member institutions have is greed and lack of foresight. They could have headed this off by proactively creating an orderly structure to both allow all NIL rights for players while also providing a fair level of basic compensation for them.

Am I the only one that sees a Hollywood style hit-man strong-arming the NCAA to fit what the SEC and B1G want? Which, basically meant leave everything alone so we can pilfer other conferences and our sleeping partners (ESPN, FOX) can manipulate all the media to make us look awesome? Thus relegating everyone else.

Plenty of blame to go around.

I am going to focus on rooting for the Cardinal and Gold and support CJR and his staff. He seems like he has the right attitude and right aptitude.

But . . . .

I do fault the NCAA for allowing the state of college athletics to devolve.
I do fault (some) agents for instilling greed and fear.
I do fault CMC for contributing to the exodus. He said he wanted to build something here. He can be proud of what he accomplished, but he cannot claim he built something other than a belief that it can be done. If he wanted to build something lasting, he would have left the foundation in place. I get he needs to win now at a school like Penn State and thus do not fault him for recruiting his recruits, but he did so at the demise of what he "built". If I build a retail empire in Iowa and want it to sustain, it would not be good to take all my staff with me to Pennsylvania to build a retail empire there. Take the processes and a couple key people - sure. Take most of the staff - nope. Same thing.

I do NOT fault any kid/young man that is taking advantage of the current landscape.

Now if CJR wins, then WE have built something (but it will take the support of fans - back to my focus). The fans can be the reason Iowa State becomes a destination and not a headline.

Or would it just have lead to players suing sooner and we’d be in this position several years earlier?

Not that it matters and people change but I do distinctly remember CMC saying he wanted to build something at ISU like Snyder did at KSU. I don’t think he accomplished that and given what is transpiring there should be no talk of a statue of him.
