An Outstanding Video on Our Defense

In a way, it's like TJ has done what Jon Heacock did for football. TJ (or more likely his assistants?) have created a half court defense that opponents have not yet figured out how to solve.

I'm not sure, though, if we're the ones who actually created this defense or if Houston or some other team did it before us. Regardless, we're the ones who've pretty much perfected it.

As was the case with Heacock's football defense, I wonder how long it will be before other teams try to adopt our type of basketball defense.

They’ve been running this defense for quite awhile and other schools have as well. I think the thing now that we’re seeing the difference too is the personnel he has to run it. He’s got some ridiculous good/athletic defenders in Lipsey, KT, and Heise. MM and JJ are a lot better than last year. Buchanen was a huge add defensively.

The guys are really good at their off ball defensive rotations, playing the gaps and jumping the passing lanes (Lipsey might be one of the best in the league at this), and speaking of rotations, they really know how to push drives outside the lane and ultimately to a trap baseline.

It will be interesting to see how the big 12 plays against us. KU is typically really good at finding the 3 pt shooter in the weak corner on the baseline drive but I would argue didn’t have that last year. I can’t really speak to what they have this year but self knows game and he knows how to gameplan against us. Just a matter of if he has the dudes.

Also, the videos on this channel that is linked here are really good. There is a lot of insight out there on channels like this that provide good breakdowns of games/teams/schemes/etc…

Agree on teams finding the open 3, but I'll accept in turn for the to's we create via the SMOTHERING traps.

Our defense is filthy this year. Toure already has what would be considered NBA-ready defense. Hoping we can keep him for more than a couple of years before scouts consider drafting him.

It's pretty fascinating to observe the differences between Self and TJ. While they both put a premium on strong defense, they each go about it very differently.

It seems Self just recruits the best individual players in the country and then he tries to mold them into the best team he can. No one can ever say Kansas doesn't have the talent.

TJ, on the other hand, has a very specific (and very demanding) system, and he recruits players that will fit that system extremely well. While many of these players are not highly sought after by the rest of the country, they fit TJ's system extremely well and are incredibly valuable to the success of his team.

It's the perfect kind of philosophy for a coach at a school like Iowa State which does not have the financial resources to just go out and buy the best players in the country.

Toure's ability to defend without making contact is outstanding.

Wasn't there a report from early in Toure's time with the team where Lipsey was getting ticked at practice because Toure was being so aggressive on defense?

Perhaps it would be good to note that the key to this defense is to believe in it, even after giving up a backdoor dunk. As I fan, I hate to see the other team get a backdoor dunk, but if we are only giving up 1 or 2 per game, I guess it means that the defense is working and I shouldn't be too concerned.

I know what I'm going to watch this season. Doubling from the low position. And giving up backdoor dunk/layups.

You're right, we are giving up several backdoor dunks or wide open 3's a game, but all the other possessions result in turnovers or highly contested shots.

The end result is our defense currently ranks #3 in the nation for fewest average points per possession, and at the end of the day, that's all that matters.

I'm hoping this aspect gets better but yeah occasionally they'll sneak through. As fans it's important to realize the opponents are D1 athletes that can do a lot with a basketball.

They'll give up open 3s too but as Matt Painter said, it's not as often as it seems and you'd better make them.

Given open threes vs. getting worked inside, I'll take the open 3s.

Lipsey is a menace and will go down as one of the all time great defenders in ISU history. And Toure may be even better with his additional length and size. Heise and Buchanan both underrated defensively, too. Special, special group we are witnessing right now.

Generally much better than college on both ends, which is why it's the NBA and I don't even really care for the NBA.

The skillsets between the two levels are night and day.
I feel like I haven’t seen consistent team defense as a focus since Detroit was on their tear of titles with Rodman and the Lakers prior to that. Just isn’t seemingly a priority of players today.

I think I recall self admitting to needing to look for more of a fit with his recruits maybe last year? I believe he realizes he can’t just get the top dudes and expect them to gel and be world beaters.

I’m always surprised the refs don’t call a foul on us. Looks like our defenders are always in the other player’s legal space with us essentially bodying right next to the other player. The only time I recall that being whistled was on Tamin last year beyond the 3-pt line. It’s good for us though.
