I watch The Birdcage every year during Pride Weekend. I have it on right now and it's so damn great and funny. Might be a top 15 movie ever for me. If you've never seen it, it holds up incredibly well.

I agree. I have watched it a few times. Always funny. PIRIN still makes me laugh and we refer to it whenever one of us has an ailment.
For me, my most LOL moment came when the senator (Gene Hackman) tried to sneak out of the establishment disguised in a wig, dress and lipstick. Man, I laughed so damn hard!

He is so good. I love him cluelessly repeating “I don’t understand” after Nathan Lane’s true identity is revealed.
And Hank Azaria is a riot. So many great lines. “I never wear shoes, because they make me fall down.” “It’s supposed to be an entree!” “Good evening. May I take your purse as usual … or for the very first time?”
Its one of my favorite casted movies, ever.

I can’t remember which theater it was, but the original Italian/French movie (La Cage aux Folles) ran all the time at some Des Moines theater into at least the mid-late 80s.
The ad in the Register had the translated title, so when the Williams/Hackman/Lane movie came out I finally figured out what that movie was all about. Still haven’t gone back to watch it, largely because it is hard to imagine it without Nathan Lane.
Does Nathan Lane ever have a bad role? He's good in everything I've seen. He had that reoccurring role in modern family that was consistently good.
Does Dianne Wiest also fit this column?
She was an 80s staple and always fit everything perfectly.

This popped up after watching that scene: Nathan Lane talks about Hackman on the Colbert show. And his run down on upcoming Kennedy Center productions is damn funny, too.
Nathan is correct about Hackman's acting range. Favorites of mine are Mississippi Burning (with Willem Defoe) and Crimson Tide (Denzel Washington). And many other roles.
