Definitely a great landing spot to have an opportunity. Nuggets are a team in the 1st apron and are going to do everything they can to stay under the 2nd apron, so they've got very limited ability to make moves this offseason and had no draft picks. They also have a lack of depth at guard, especially with Westbrook opting out.

Given that he's an older, more polished prospect, he can show out in the summer league and he's got a great shot at a two-way and/or making the roster. Fun for him since they are a contender!

What is the layman’s explanation of what the aprons are?

It’s so confusing.

The best I can understand it is there are some competitive disadvantages to the first apron (luxury tax, some other stuff), but if your team is good enough it’s not a big deal.

The second apron hamstrings you so much competitively (not able to take on salary in trades, can’t use all these exceptions to sign free agents, etc.) it effectively acts as a hard cap.

I'm probably trying too hard, but his game seems similar to Jamal Murray's with less hops but maybe more D. Both are 6'4" combo guards that can get in the lane and get on heaters from 3.

Murray is a PG. I personally think he’d be better off the ball, but his handle is way better than Jones’. Murray is better at getting his own shot too and can score at all 3 levels. I should say when he’s playing his best basketball. He’s pretty inconsistent

Different thresholds as teams exceed the cap by different amounts. They impose greater luxury tax amounts, restrict flexibility to make trades, etc.

Basically the CBA has these barriers to severely discourage exceeding the salary cap substantially. Almost all teams are fighting to be under that second apron because it so significantly hampers your flexibility in roster building/changing

Also if you exceed the 2nd apron for 3 out of 4 consecutive seasons, you get hit with an absolutely insane “repeater tax.” Contending teams regularly go over the second apron, but I don’t think anyone has paid the repeater tax yet. It’s why Boston started shedding salary for next year.

It looks like Denver will have up to 6 spots to fill for next season. With Westbrook opting out and a team option for Trey Alexander, there’s definitely an opportunity for a roster spot.

I was looking at what the Nuggets have to replace:

Backup PG: Westbrook (Maybe they'd bring back Monte??)
3rd string PF: Vlatko Cancar
4th string C: DeAndre Jordan

Might be hard to make opening day roster unless he can compete with Jalen Pickett & Julian Strawther. Both of which they have draft capital invested in and are under contract for two more years. I suppose they could just go guard heavy and sign him but I would assume they would replace guys at positions they lost. You can only dress 12 so you'd hate to stash a guy like Curtis and not get him playing time. Not saying its impossible but he'd have to show out in the summer league.

Making a two way may be easier but with G Tamar Bates (nearly a 50/40/90 guy last year!) already signing a two way deal that only leaves two spots. Trey Alexander was the only guard on a two way last year, he was great in the G league but had horrible splits with the nuggets in the limited time he played. Its certainly possible they go guard heavy in either the three remaining roster positions or two of the two-way spots left but we will see. Trades/releases can happen too so who knows.

I hope he catches on. Wife has family in Golden, CO and we used to go Nuggets games all the time when we visited to watch Monte. Haven’t been to a game since they let him go. I NEVER thought I would enjoy a live NBA game but they are pretty damn fun.
It's one of those sports that I think is better live than on tv, the skill level of the players is just unbelievable. I just wish they call the fouls, traveling and the rest of the crap they let them get away with.
