I had to do research, not a layup, but a missed short shot & desperation shot at buzzer. (Barnes and Sullivan were a combined 4-for-26 shooting).

I don't remember that game firsthand at all, I must have had other commitments.
Wasn't televised.

Is Batemon a PG? Not disagreeing. It's just that I keep reading that he is a shooting guard which may have changed during his senior year.
With the offense TJ runs, I question whether a traditional PG is critical. Tamin was 3rd in assists behind Gilbert and Jefferson over the Big12 season. Lipsey averaged under 3 apg.

So as long as Batemon has a good handle, can dribble-drive and makes good decisions- he should be able to handle PG role in ISU's offense.

Good point. I guess the question is whether he can handle the ball well enough against defensive pressure.

Thanks. Thought that might've been the case.

I seem to remember following it on ESPN tracker (don't think I had Net service in that period, oddly). I figured either wasn't televised, or wasn't available in my coverage area, being an early-round game.

It's possible only final four for NIT was widely available back then. I don't think I was able to see any of the ISU games in 2004 NIT until semifinal.

While I dont entirely disagree, a fan can dream cant he?

Yep that's what it means to be a fan-atic. Nothing wrong with a little Cyclone optimism!

I'll tweak your lineup a little:

PG - Toure
2G - Batemon
SF - Mitchell
PF - Momcilovic (As a senior he'll have a grown man's body)
C - Buchanon

I feel like 6' 8" is still small for a 4

Jefferson is 6'8" and had a size advantage over almost everyone we played at the 4
woof, clearly its been too long of a day already. For some reason i thought he was taller. Great pull, thanks!

I suspect Rhode is over valuing himself. The Portal is littered with guys just like him or better in my opinion. Tall guys are making the meat of the money in the portal. Centers and Power forwards with some elite guards getting some pay. I don't think Rhode is anymore Elite than Heise to be honest. In fact end of the year Heise is super solid in that spot.
So is the hang up with him$$? Think the Heise comparison is spot on. Maybe a bit higher upside, but still a bit of a gamble. The fact that he seemingly had some type of issue on his visit is a red flag to me. On the surface, seems like a good fit for TJ so him having even a small issue surprised me.

I think this is a good point, Tamin played off the ball at times and we had Gilbert, Jones, and even Jefferson bring the ball up the court at times and initiate the offense.

Not really sure what the issue is with him. Sounds like maybe TJ and him didn't hit it off?? That is just what is being said on this site that I have read. Not sure if it's true or not.

Was a wild environment for an NIT game. Had to have been a sellout and Iowas little guard might have hit the game winner and let everyone know about it.

**** hit the fan about 2 months later.

Some updates on names mentioned or familiar-
Conor Enright is going to Indiana, as rumored
Langston Love is going from Baylor to Georgetown
Cam Manyawu & Kael Combs are following McCollum to Iowa

Also, Camden Heide from Purdue, who is a very similar player to Nate Heise, is in the portal - if we wanted to double-up the Heise/Heide

Perplexing to me. If indeed it was an issue with TJ (and complete speculation on that) needs to be a hard pass I would think. Hardly ever hear about a visit not going well. Just seems like this guy would be our type of guy.

This is one of the reasons the current NIL mess is so silly. In the NBA you don’t bring Georges Niang into your office and ask him what he wants out of his time in Cleveland. Front offices talk, and decide to trade employees. That’s it. “Catch the next plane to Atlanta, Georges.” I’m speculating, but it seems the reason it’s so difficult for schools like Iowa State to compete in this environment is that the first question they get is, “How much can you pay me”—to which the real answer that no one can say out loud is, “Not as much as some schools”—then even if a kid doesn’t walk once he gets a number, some essentially want to discuss What can you do for me. I’m all for freedom-of-labor, but it’s so ridiculous we have to pretend these aren’t employees, and worse, *that they are allowed to school hop and there are virtually no consequences for doing so.* That is my NBA point. Outside of the cream of the crop, role players are hoping to get picked up, teams have leverage. Not the other way around. If Team A decided to trade with Iowa State, it wouldn’t matter what John Doe feels.

But, that’s partly due to how few NBA teams there are compared with D1. I don’t know, I don’t fall squarely on one side of the fence. I guess what I’m lamenting is that kids don’t have to sign multi-year contracts.
