I was going to ask how that's even possible, but it would mean that they either picked up wins in the "play-in", or before the field expanded to 64.
Most of those wins were in the Maury John era. 1960s.” before the 64 team field

Similarly, while it is of course super-impressive what UCLA did (won seven straight tourneys, and won 10 in 12 years), they weren't beating 64-team fields back then.

KJ Adams is like the rural Iowa football jock who has very little basketball skill but is athletic enough to be a star on the Class 1A basketball team.

You still have to have skill in any class to be a star player. Todd Blythe was that guy for 4A Indianola back in the day.

The pace of this Drake game does not seem like what McCollum would want. But neither team landing any blows and largely just chasing each other back and forth.

I think he is more than happy with the pace.
