Past seasons also help one measure the job the staff has done. This team isn’t more talented than several from the past 13 years. Hell of a job to have them in the position to be upset as the #9 team
There's some luck involved, matchups are important.
But part of it is that we rarely get an advantageous seed, because we can't consistently win games. Especially with a target on our backs and getting other teams' best shots every week.
Our chances at a deep run diminished with every one of these bad losses. Even though the vast majority of our fanbase isn't going to realize it until the bracket comes out, we see what our path is, and then we complain about bad matchups.
Well, that's what happens when you lose to WVU, KSU, and OSU. It's not that we have bad luck, it's that we have a very thin margin for error and/or we just aren't as good as we think we are.

Not playing well at all and I have serious doubts on how far we will go in NCAA Tournament. That being said think we will bounce back Saturday night vs. Arizona and play well.
I'm not on the staff and not privy to their planning. But I do listen to what they say in public. TJ can't open his mouth without talking about how much they value habits and being what they are rather than adjusting for an opponent. It seems to me the fact that it was the last buy game suggests that it was part of the ramp up to the conference normal. "Here we go into conference play. Here is how we are going to expect you to play and finish the game."
It sounds to me like using that last tune up game to build and reinforce the new normal and habits for the conference season.
In the KSU game ISU had 48 bench minutes (keep in mind that doesn't include CuJo who started) compared to KSU's 30 minutes. They weren't exactly calling off the dogs in that one. By the same token Kansas' stars like Adams, Dickinson, Harris and Mayo played to the final horn. Again, there was no calling off the dogs.
Outside of the 2011-12 team, that had to play an elite Kentucky team in the 2nd round, I don’t think that’s been too impactful imo. Gotta avoid playing one of the few elite teams in 2nd round
Maybe 2013 could have won more regular season games in order to get a tangibly easier path until Sweet 16
It marginally impacted 2016 and 2017, but we were 4 and 5 seeds. I mean, come on. As the previous post shows, a lot of FF teams overcome far worse seeds
It didn’t impact 2000, 2002, 2014, 2015, or 2024 imo
2005, 2022, and 2023 weren’t inherently talented enough to be better than a bubble teams that would need to play above seed and upset better teams in order to make a deep run
2019 clearly had better talent than a 6th seed, but given we lost to a 11, I’m not sure how much it capped our run potential. The real issue wasn’t the seed, but the complete program meltdown that caused the seed.
Better load management doesn’t compromise valuing habits and everything TJ preaches. False dichotomy
Playing guys in garbage time is just as likely to develop bad habits and the precedent of holding back on some possessions. We don’t need these starters going all out when up big in a December buy game.
Additionally, if experienced starters benefit in those minutes, guys like Watson and Cade benefit more.
We’ve seen TJ make adjustments. I anticipate he’ll adjust on this, given that what was needed when he took over is different than returning a top 25 team with a culture already established
There was? I've been around a long time now and we've made the tourney on a pretty consistent basis with every coach we've had except McDermott.
The sky is falling and we are trending to a #6 seed. Check Lunardi’s updated bracket and we moved to the top 3 seed (#9 overall) after that loss.

For sure I think if we finish out the year strong we’ll still be a 3 seed. I also believe when all our guys are available we’re a top two team in the Big 12. Could be the best but that’s moot. Even with missing key contributors for half of the conference season, we are in a spot to get third and I’ll still take that.

In all seriousness, 12 out of 27 seems like a pretty good rate to me. Wasn't the tournament only 48 teams until 1986? It's alot easier to make the tournament in this current version of college basketball than it was 30 or 40 years ago. The Big 8 and Big 12 were absolutely loaded back then and no unbalanced schedules.
Amazing how everything can now be totally broken when just last Saturday everyone was engaged and they, despite being shorthanded, went blow for blow with a top 5 team at their house.
