Sure, but if you’re expecting freshman guards to start immediately that’s a tough feat. Otz will get a guard or two that can score big in the portal. Bench should be deeper next year and if the guys can develop then the team will be very tough to beat. I like Batemon a lot, but he’s not likely a starter next year as a freshman. Otz will get a one year scoring guard and Batemon will get bench minutes and hopefully be ready to take over as a sophomore.

Did Lipsey start early as a freshman? Milan (a 3 but still)?

What am I missing?

Aren't there good freshman coming in? Is the offseason development being discounted?

Im interested to see what Jamarion Batemon can do if he can carve out some minutes as a freshman. He looks like the real deal

So because of two guys you’re assuming it’s a lock for freshman to start now? The majority of freshman will not start. Our highest rated recruit ever barely played. It’s unknown how ready high school kids will be as a freshman.

No, I'm not assuming, I just know that it's possible to start as a freshman and so far under TJ, newcomers, no matter age/experience, have been very well prepared to play.

Every year under TJ except this year, a freshman has started and has been a major contributor.

It's not worth thinking 'welp, yesterday is ISU next year' since we don't know how that will play out and there's still (hopefully) a month left of the current season for a very good ISU team.

Sure, that’s all valid. But since we have to replace two guards, TJ is going to grab a guard in the portal. I think that significantly reduces Batemon’s chances of starting as a freshman. He could be the first guy off the bench. It’s certainly possible Batemon ends up starting, just my opinion that the odds are stacked against Batemon being a starter next year.

I think people are discounting the freshman we have coming in too much because we've never had so much talent like this coming in. Any one of the five could play next year and I fully expect 2 or 3 or even 4 to have decent roles.

So much easier for a guard vs a 7ft center. He just looks awkward and slow on the floor when he is out there.
That’s kind of the opposite of how it tends to work in college. Those 7 ft guys usually take a couple years to fill out, let their skill and coordination catch up to their frames while guards are usually more ready to play early on.

So in other words there's a good chance ISU is still good next year and it doesn't make sense to say yesterday was a preview of next year's team.

Bingo. Rock is also just a redshirt freshman. He’s put on some good weight, but he’s still a little slow at the college level. He was taken as a project and needs more time to develop. He’s got a chance to turn into something really good, but people need to be patient with him. It’s not over with him yet.

Yes, I think the team will be good next year. My OP said the Houston game was a preview of next year minus what happens in the transfer market with our guards. It’s obvious we need a scoring guard and we ended up playing a tough game that we could’ve won if Shead didn’t hit every single step back 3 and if the elbow to Heise’s face had been properly called.

Edit: sorry, I meant Cryer.

Yes and they should have the opportunity to compete for time but we should have a veteran option for them to compete with. With the new scholarship limit why not add a couple stop gaps?

All of that takes more money, money that according to Blum we do not have. He has done a tremendous job keeping our players here.

Not like we’ve had deep pockets before this and we’ve always added huge pieces in the portal. This year we only really need 1 combo guard and 1 backup 5.

Yikes. We’re due for a real lesson if this attitude permeates through our fan/donor base.

For the 17th million time - it’s not just about paying new players we have to find in the Portal, it’s about paying our existing players to stay at Iowa State. Both of which will likely get higher offers from other good programs with good cultures and good coaches.

We didn’t pay our players to stay last year?

So we should all be “no way we can get good players in the portal”even though we’ve done it every year under TJ?

Tamin, Milan and Jefferson will probably need raises. Four of our five recruits will probably get paid( Pleta is foreign)

We have a window with this core. Hopefully the next group performs the same but fans need to realize if we ever lose our top players it’s going to affect how future players view us.

I was referencing the additional scholarship issue, not the portal.

I wouldn’t be too scared about replacing jones and keshon from a scoring perspective… when Milan was initiating the offense from the free throw line yesterday in the second half, he was getting almost everything he wanted and scoring with ridiculous efficiency against one of the best defenses in the country. Milan could very well be our best iso scorer but since his usage rate is so low due to Curtis and Keshon handling the ball, he doesn’t get the PPG he could generate. If nojus, Batemon, or some other guard can step up I’m not that worried about scoring. Maybe take one transfer to add depth but doesn’t need to be some coveted stud.
