SNL 50 (favorite skits)

Thought last night's show was very good. Hard to get that many people involved and to keep everyone happy. I'm sure there was a lot of ego massaging. The concert show on Friday night on Peacock was incredible. If you have the chance to go back and watch that I would highly recommend it.
Just the audience shots were amazing. That was a crowd full of comedy all stars.

I've liked the cast over the last couple of years. Someone hit it on the head, the recurring skits are what they are missing out on (movie type level) but I think episodes have been fairly solid for the most part. Good variety of things too.

Wish they had included David Spade and Tim Meadows more than they did. An episode of The Ladies Man would have been great or even Wayne's World. Didn't see Dana Carvey there or Cheri Oteri either? They didn't really dip into the political stuff much which was refreshing but some of those former cast members played some funny ones over the years that maybe could have dipped into a blast from the past that way too. 50 years is a lot of content to weed through though so probably had some tough decisions on who got to perform.

Will Ferrell had some great sketches over there years. The one where he played John Rocker on Weekend Update was funny. Plenty of Harry Caray skits too

I wish they would have let Spade do weekend update the Hollywood minute

Probably not popular to say today with DEI, but I think the diversity really helps this cast. The other thing I’ll say is that the ability of the host to participate makes a huge difference. Athletes and musicians usually don’t add much. That’s why you see the same people hosting again and again.

Anybody see a full video of the Nirvana performance online?

I’m not even a huge fan but the bits I can hear of it seem pretty great.

Weekend update has pretty routinely been the best part of the show these past few years. Che and Jost are really good at it.

I watch every new episode on demand and usually forward past the musical acts. I actually think that they have a pretty solid cast right now. The digital shorts are usually pretty good. IMO what they are missing are those home run recurring skits/characters that end up turning into movies. That’s kind of a lightning in a bottle thing that the current cast hasn’t found yet.
I don’t watch much but when I have weekend update is really funny.

Not saying the show is as good as it has been, but if you watched full episodes from any era and not just highlights of the best skits, and there were lots of duds.

Plus I think people look at the old rosters that had tons of success after SNL and think the show was automatically better.

Not to mention the “the show sucks now compared to what it used to be” had been a constant since I was a kid watching in the mid 90s.

A huge % of humans think the comedy of their teens and 20s is the peak of humor. There have been studies. It’s just human nature.

I used to tape snl in late 80s snd 90s and watch on Sunday mornings. Tradition started with my family. We’d all agree to skip musical guest 90% of time and about a third of sketches. Tricky part was not fast forwarding past a fake commercial.

I’ve been watching on Sunday mornings on youtube now for many years the same way. Skip musical guest 90% of time and skip a sketch after a minute if not funny.
