If he can’t get minutes for us he should transfer to somewhere he will. He has an NBA body - one year shooting 40% from deep and a team might take a flyer on him.

I assume it as simple as he is 9th on the depth chart and TJ plays 8.

IMO - If ISU was 1-15 it could be a topic of discussion- with ISU at 15-1 it’s really not.

Fyi - He was hurt in Maui that’s why he didn’t play there.

A shark got him when they were snorkeling.

Gilbert missing Watson and not hitting him for the easy alley oop but then Watson getting a block to erase a bucket seconds later kind of just sums up his career. He deserved the dunk but the block is such a better representation of how electric he can be as a player. He went baseline to baseline to make that play, I feel like we all saw it coming, it just set up perfect.
Think announcers called this out too, but Keshon forcing a change in direction gave Watson time to chase that down.

That is text book play for the guard in that situation. Exactly how you coach it.

Obviously great play and effort by Watson. Just thought it was a great example of how well these guys play for each other.

He can play. Not to the ceiling his physical attributes would suggest, but he could be a Big 12 rotation player and gives us some needed length/athleticism. His finishing ability goes well with Lipsey, Gilbert, and Jefferson

When at full strength, and against most teams, we don’t need him. But imo it was worth utilizing development minutes for him the past few seasons.

Hot take: there were times during this game that I was happy Watson was out there instead of Milan.

His block being one, but also he had some key, really tough rebounds, that there’s no way Milan would have gotten.
I think it's just with Milan you have that 15% chance that he goes off for 20+ points and can win you a game. Watson does all of the non-scoring things better than Milan.

I mean if he could shoot even 30 percent from deep here he’d be playing…I don’t think he can just do that

Right. But offensively he’s totally lost. That’s a problem.

Yea Milan can just get a shot anytime too, like at the end of the first Huston game last year. He has that length and the fade away. Him and CUJO really space out a defense.

On defense yes but even when Milan is not scoring 20 he spreads the floor and allows a more clear lane for Keshon to score. Milan makes the offense way better by just having that ability. Watson is one heck of a defender though

He’s basically a rim runner. He’s not lost, he’s just limited in what he can do.

I suppose lost is maybe the wrong word, but he does not move from the short corner. That’s probably where he is supposed to be, but the fact he doesn’t go into any motion is kind of crazy. Severely limits the offense. He is no way a threat to shoot the ball.

Defense, very good. But I think we saw why he doesn’t get much run with this team when everyone is healthy if they keep the rotation tight at 8.

Having Milan out there in the middle part of the 2nd half would have helped get us out of the slug our offense became for a bit. KU’s defense was sagging off everybody (off the ball), minus CuJo, and clogged everything up in the paint.

Having a second knockdown shooter really spaces out defenses.

Not to mention not many people can get around him one on one. He looked really good tonight.

Agree with almost all of this. He’s in the short corner for lobs and offensive rebounds, because that’s all he can really do on that side of the floor.

Only minor disagreement, I think there is value to him seeing some minutes in games where we are getting killed in the boards. He’s an excellent rebounder.

Physically speaking, Watson should be the superior defender (both on ball and off), rebounder, and finisher. Particularly if had gotten as many minutes as Milan to get comfortable

It’s easy to forget that Watson got 14 minutes in our biggest game last season (loss to Illinois), and played better than Milan in that time imo. It’s likely we’ll play a team with that length on the perimeter again

The point being, this shouldn’t be an either/or imo. This staff is elite, but a wasted opportunity to not play guys like Watson when games aren’t competitive.

Making deep runs in March requires being able to win many ways and matching up with many types of opponents. It often requires guys being ready when injuries or foul trouble arise.

Yea he is good rebounding, but if we are getting killed on the boards with this team when fully healthy…we have bigger problems in that game that Watson probably won’t fix.

This is his shot though. Make it so TJ unable to keep you out of the game. He has 5ish weeks to do it, probably the best chance of his career.
