For 10 years, Iowa State football players have worn No. 58 to honor the late defensive ends coach Curtis Bray. Those who wear the jersey not only carry his legacy, but often see their performance reach new heights.

Curtis Bray was the defensive ends coach for Iowa State from 2009 until his untimely death in 2014. A former standout linebacker at the University of Pittsburgh, Bray brought his passion and knowledge to the Cyclones.

Sometimes these honors have a tendency to die out over time (there are several basketball ones that have).

I think it is cool that the Campbell staff has kept this up over the years even though Bray wasn't a part of this staff. I know I've seen pictures of the Bray family with some recent players who have had his number.

Who have been the recipients other than J.R. Singleton this year?

Coach Bray's son was a senior at Ames this year. Wore 58 on the football team and sits several rows behind me at Jack Trice. Not sure what his plans are plans are and I'm pretty sure he was the youngest kid in the family, but I'm glad they at least kept the tradition going for him to watch.

Used to have an Iowa State basketball player wear the number 40 in honor of Chris Street. I don't think that is done any longer
