***Official 2025 Weather Thread***

As somebody who drove through it on Hwy 30 this morning, I sure appreciated the heads up. Went from nearly bare pavement to 3" of snow and couldn't see either edge of the road in less than 15 miles.
People's insistance with not wanting to be informed on potential weather is a dynamic I will never understand.
Snow squalls can be dangerous as the visibility can drop dramatically in a very short time period/distance. This has led to many car pileups. I don't necessarily have an issue alerting the public about the snow squall, but they could do a better job explaining why it can be a dangerous situation
Best part of this weather front…
- we leave for Arizona on Tuesday to watch the Twister Sisters play ASU and AZ. It’s in the 70’s there.
The worst part?
- the snow here (southern Iowa) Sunday is going to be severe and will likely make us miss the Sister's game against Utah. We are supposed to get 6-12 inches Sunday. I need four wheel drive again!

Snow squalls are a pain in the butt, I got into one that hit after a BB game I was coaching about 8 years ago. Only had an inch or two of snow, but you cannot see the road at all. I about drove off the parking lot into a corn field leaving the school. Once on the highway, I cracked up the nav. system as low as possible and just followed the route. Drove maybe 20 to 25 mph then entire 40 miles, took me about an hour and half. I spoke to the coach from the other team a couple weeks later and he told me it took them 3 hours to get home that night, it should have taken them an hour or so. Not a fun driving experience.
A better question is why are they trying to get a couple of days in at the end of the week at all. KCCI had 15 schools either delayed or cancelled. Let the kids and staff have a nice break and bring everyone back on Monday.
I'm so glad I got all the outdoor Christmas stuff taken down on Sunday when it was still nice.
Wife started back today. Schools up here generally try to get done by Memorial Day or else the parents, teachers, and students get owly if they go after. They pack 5 snow days in each year and they used 2 for the state playoffs. Not sure if that is the reasoning at other schools but that’s what it is around here and most schools are back today in the area.
They all want a week for either spring or Easter break. Take a long weekend and you can still get out before Memorial Day. The last year at Harmony, we knew we were closing and it was unbelievable the amount of days they scheduled off. Two full weeks at Christmas, a week off for Thanksgiving, and then they took a full week off for Easter. I suppose they figured the state would *****, but since we were closing anyway, there was nothing they could do about it. The staff was ******** about not having enough time to cover the material, but the supt. could have not cared less.
In all fairness, they do, but that would require reading the actual details of the alert. IMO people could do a better job understanding why they issue these alerts to begin with.
Driving to work this morning was not fun. Almost slide through an intersection but luckily wasn't going too fast and gave myself plenty of distance to stop. My car battery also crapped out on me so I had to go get a new battery. I can replace it myself, but with the crappy weather and needing to get to work, I paid the extra to have Interstate Batteries install it for me.
Driving to Ames sucked this morning. It's nice that the city of Ames still sticks to their tradition of using the solar powered method of snow plowing
