Again linebacker. We are playing basically all FCS level backers and that’s being generous to a few. I will give Brezina a pass since he showed flashes but didn’t play enough to get a feel for.
Actually LB will be really good next year IMO.

Brezina played great before he was hurt and Bacon will be back as well, and McLaughlin. Ebel also played well and has a bright future I believe. And there were others who were hurt who'll be back next season too.

None of those LBs actually played well this year. We ranged from awful to mediocre at the position all year.

Sorry. You're not watching what I'm watching. Brezina was playing at an all conference level before his injuries. And mark my words: he'll be a superstar if he stays healthy. Bacon healthy is also 1st team all conference level.

Slot receiver? ISU runs 12 personnel over 50% of the time. That’s 2 WRs, 2 TEs, and RB. What good does bringing in a slot receiver do? They rarely run sets with more than two receivers. Not to mention they brought in 2 receivers last off season who never see the field. Never did understand why with the offense Campbell runs.
They need to switch that up and bring in some speed. It would be nice to completely revamp the offense and try some new things, but we know that won't happen.

Hawthorne could be a good one too, but don't expect much out of him as a true freshman.

So you are saying we can count on Carson Willich (2 major knee injuries in last 4 years), and Caleb Bacon (total knee blow up this year) to be healthy going forward?
So you are saying we can count on ________ for those other positions?

That's right. They're gone. What I am saying is I'd much rather recruit empty positional gaps than 'over' someone, especially when those returning were starters before they were injured.

Yeah… you are right. I definitely did not watch any ISU LBs play at an all conference level this season.

I thought Brezina looked good for a true freshman and an improvement over the abysmal play of some others. He looked like a future starter and an actual Big 12 LB. But he was far from being an all conference LB at this point in his career. And Bacon has yet to play at that level either. Maybe next year.

No. No he wasn't.

Might he be one day? Sure. Brezina has talent but no, he was not playing at all conference level.
Bacon? Love him. Great kid, all heart, not an all conference LB either,.

Our line backing corps is very unathletic. They'd be all conference in the Big10 west. Or if they played ourselves. But when playing in space against high level athletes... yeah, we need to upgrade that position. Obviously being healthy would help , of course. And we'd be better there if we are healthy. Sure. But no, we're not that good at that position.

It’s almost like firing Manning didn’t fix the problem. It’s so weird.
It did. We got Nate, who spiced up the offense enough to get an NFL job after one year. The problem is all in what CMC wants to run. I think Clanton's doing yeoman's work getting Linemen who will hopefully be able to pave the road for our next, great RB.

Not completely sold on Sama. I love how Hansen runs downhill, but isn't that elusive. Jackson's not it, either. Beyond those guys, I'm not really seeing any difference makers in the RB room yet.

Brezina looked great at times but was hurt most of the year.
Bacon - there is ZERO guarantee he comes back to where he was as he may have had a total knee reconstruction for all we know.
Mclaughlin looked slowish and outclassed today. He's fair, not great and never going to be a 2nd team all big 12 type.
Ebel has the physical skills but just misses a lot of tackles. Been that way all year.

LB is our weakest position group on the team and I cannot be convinced otherwise. We cannot count on guys to be "really good" next year given their injury history. We have to go portal shopping at LB, that's like a non negotiable to me.
