My son is a Material Science engineering student in his 3rd year. He has gone to the the last few career fairs and had some good conversations. Nothing has worked out for him. He has a solid cumulative gpa, like 3.3 or so. He can have conversations with anyone. But has had no real opportunities for an internship. I had told him to reach out to 50 different companies, but guessing he came up way short of that. But the latest disappointment for him is with Mechdyne, not even an interview. I'm not bagging on them, at least he got further than anywhere else. But was hopeful since CDub says they love hiring ISU students. :)

Any tips or companies that he should still try with? It seems many places are going away from interns and I get that.

What kind of work is he looking to do post-grad?

I would have thought that faculty in the department would have tons of internships lined up for students in their majors.

Best advice I have as a former engineering student and as a recruiter that comes for the career fairs often.

1) Tell him to talk to every single company that hires MSE students. Getting that first internship makes it a lot easier to get a second one. Some companies may be slower or late to the recruiting cycle, so there may still be opportunities in the spring engineering career fair.

2) Use the free resources that the college of engineering offers. They have free resume review sections, free interview seminars etc.

3) Be involved. Another thing that helps land the first internship is being involved in extracurricular activity. Engineering clubs etc. The more hands on the better.

Hope this helps.

As an FYI Cyhire will let him filter for people
looking for MSE for the next fair. Then on top of that walk around everybotb during the fair and look for those with the MSE recruiting dot on their banners.

Does it have to be this coming summer or will he do a 5th year to finish the degree? Some companies are already settled for this coming summer.

Arconic (formerly Alcoa) in the Quad Cities hires Metallurgical Engineering summer interns. They make aluminum sheet and plate for several industries.

They have a posting on their careers website:

He will graduate in 4 years. He had 40+ hours of AP credit.
I'm an mse grad, my company already went through the process already, but there are some good suggestions in this thread already. Also look into Collins and maybe danfoss if he wants to stay in state. If he doesn't have any luck ask around the advisors for professors looking for lab help, it's good experience and he could probably do it next semester and over the summer if he wanted.

As an Engineer and a Father of a fairly recent ISU ME graduate, that first internship is the toughest to get. If you have any contacts that are Engineers, don’t hesitate to ask them about internships. Most Engineers want to help students if they can. Hopefully someone on here will have a lead. I know HNI (HON) in Muscatine hires a bunch of summer interns each year, but I don’t know about MSE. Check their website. If I hear of any openings I will reach out.
