Craig McDonald transfers a third time

I was excited for him; big safety who started to see the field more for us, then left.

Probably going to go the Isheem Young route of dropping down in competition level until you find somewhere you can have an impact.

I know, sour grapes. But he’d comfortably be behind Cooper, Verdon, Freyler if he was still here.
I have to say, I'm surprised he was not playing. He was playing very well for ISU at the end. I'm not all that surprised Isheem Young didn't play. His play was a bit of a rollercoaster.

I think the big ISU safeties like McDonald and Young fit a role pretty well in ISUs defense and can be a bit of tough fit in some defenses. If teams are going to play a bunch of two-deep zone, not so much their strength. Same goes for Freyler, though he's much better overall.

It's funny with guys like Freyler and people refer to him as a hybrid. He's really a prototypical, old school SS. It's almost like the fullback. Instead of a guy every team used, it's a bit more of a niche role in the NFL.

seems like he was being passed by younger players at minnesota. I think at this point he wants to get playing time. Maybe a good pick up for a G6 team or FCS. I wish the best for former cyclones as long as they don't trash our program when they leave. Iowa State lately seem to be able to fill in spots when people leave. Wish it could've worked out here.

Yeah, I think you are right, but would still love to have him for depth.

Always feels like Freyler is one awkward tackle away from that shoulder going out.

Dudes going to end up playing for the Barnstormers. Maybe the grass isn't always greener and staying and developing at a good developmental program like ISU is a better plan than chasing the bag now. This is a story that will only help ISU retain it's talent.

quality depth is crucial for teams like isu. look at our line backers. this is the first year freylor, verdon, or coop have avoided the injury bug, but the season is only half over.

He showed some real potential at Iowa State his freshman year and his family seemed to be all great supporters on social media. When he entered the portal, it was a big surprise. Tough to find a spot with a quality program when you haven't seen the field all that much at your previous stops.

I can't think of one player that has left the program and had success.
Id like to see the success rate of guys that transfer “up”. It’s fun to see guys drop down and succeed at a level more suited for them. Like the MAC or FCS. I’ll always root for those guys. But how many have tried to chase a bag and flopped.
