***Official 2024 Chicago Cubs Thread***

.190 hitter just nukes one off him. Good job, Jed!

What…the…****.

2 outs runner on second. Amaya lets a guy DELAY STEAL 3rd and then the next pitch is a passed ball to score the run.

JV baseball. Incredible.

Amaya didn't let the guy steal.

Wisdom was basically playing SS hole so Reds baserunner easily got to 3rd because Wisdom had a lot of distance to cover and didn't cover 3rd well.

But that run was prime example of Cubs players (Wisdom & Amaya WP) not being solid on fundamentals.

why in the name of god is Taillion pitching. What can possibly be lost by bumping him a day?
If he does get traded, his new team isn't going to pitch him right away. Sure an injury is possible, but chances very small.

If I'm the Cubs, I'm trying to win this game, so I throw my best pitcher available. Taillon's turn, Taillon pitches.

Wisdom didn't cover 3rd and it was a wild pitch that scored the run. Busch's fielding has been way more costly.

It's officially a WP, but I feel like most catchers get in front of that pitch. Heck, I think Amaya probably makes that play much of the time.

But just an example of how things snowball against the Cubs.

I would be critical of Counsell's feel for game. The Reds were getting good swings on Taillon most of night. Guys on 1st & 2nd with Friedl up, Counsell needed to go to bullpen.

First time I’ve seen Counsell stand up for his players on the field and it’s the guy he reportedly pushed to acquire 2 days ago. Hope that fire continues. Only knock is it may be taking the attention off Jed for allowing Taillon to pitch

Hoping for lots of action the next 20 hours but not sure Jed will do what’s best for the franchise.

Have to find a way to get money off the books for 2025. Neris at a minimum.

Blue Jays got a huge return for a guy worse than Taillon. Hoping Jed didn’t blow that opportunity

One bad start will have nearly zero impact to Taillon’s trade value. Just more important that he stayed healthy. If he wants to deal him, he’ll get a good return. Might be wanting to keep him around all along though.

Definitely think a reliever or two will be on the move. By the way, Neris’ option becomes a player option at 60 appearances. He’s got 40 through 108 games, or exactly on pace for 60. If he sticks around, it’ll be pretty easy to game that and come up just short.

He could have pitched tomorrow. It was just unnecessarily reckless.

There was no reason to pitch Tallion tonight if we are listening to offers for him. If they don't trade Neris then need to make sure they limit his use so he doesn't get the player option. If there is something of value to get in a trade involving Leiter and Merryweather or any reliever that is replaceable I'm not against it because you can always sign and acquire bullpen arms and relievers in general are just so volatile season to season. Lights out 1 season then gets knocked around the next is not uncommon. Cubs have had their fair share of that over the years.

Just hoping Jed doesn't do something stupid and make some trades that he thinks will get them a wild card spot this year and trade off pieces that could helpmin 2025.

I haven't looked, does the guy have a 2 year/$18 million dollar per year collar around his neck? How much of that is Jed willing to eat to make the trade?

It’s entirely possible teams are concerned about the contract. I personally wouldn’t want Jed throwing any extra money in on the deal.

Comparing his contract to all of last years FA SPs earning between $15-20 MM

Eduardo Rodriguez - 4 yr, $80 MM ($20 AAV)
Lucas Gialito - 2 yr, $39 mm ($19.5 AAV)
Marcus Stroman - 2 yr, $37 MM ($18.5 AAV)
Michael Wacha - 2 yr, $32 MM ($16 AAV)
Frankie Montas - 1 yr, $16 MM

I don’t think it’s a stretch to say Taillons contract is more favorable than all of those with the potential exception of Wacha.

I’m not saying teams should take it, but I don’t think they would be signing any pitcher with similar production in the offseason much cheaper

I know anything positive on here will be met with backlash but our lineup should get longer starting today.
Hoerner Busch Paredes Bellinger Suzuki Happ

Unless they think Ballesteros is ready i think we add a league average bat behind the plate next year. Would love to see Taillon and a prospect or two head to Boston for their catching prospect. With PCA in the lineup it's pretty clear we can't have another out everytime through at the end of the lineup.

Flaherty didn't even get 15 million? Every team made a mistake not signing him. He's going to be expensive this offseason

1 year, $14 MM. 3 of the previous 4 years, he had an ERA near 5.00. I'd say he's similar to a Taillon. Can be elite, but is also a risk. Agree, though, that he's going to be getting a nice paycheck this offseason.

After sitting on it, my working theory is that Jed was told we still have to have a winning product in 2024 both for his job AND for Marquee subscriptions.

Who is gone in the next 6 hours?

Who I want (and is possible) in order: Neris, Smyly, Taillon, Lopez, Tauchman, Wisdom, Hoerner

Who I think, in order of Jed's thoughts:

Neris - Saves $9 MM, assuming a team won't use him as a closer. I could even see Jed covering this years entire salary just to make sure he's safe next year.

Tauchman - Opens the door for Caissie

A 2B - Because we have too many. May wait until offseason.

Taillon - Saves $18 MM next year which can help lead to TWO stars with what you already have.

Speific trade thought:

Taillon + 2B + Lopez or Neris to Yankees for Jasson Dominguez.
