On That Note: 4 What It’s Worth (part 3)

This week, we conclude our albums-by-decade series for 2024.

And as you said, adjust the years:
Post your favorite LPs released in 2004 and/or 2014. (Those years only, NOT the entire decade.)

Include 3 or 4 sound clips. In addition to the tracks, we encourage you to expound on why the album is meaningful, including personal history of your relationship with the record and its music.

Choices should focus on studio albums. Avoid greatest hits/live LPs/compilations. We’ll allow it, but it should be a definitive element of an artist’s body of work that isn’t otherwise available from studio output.

If someone posts an album on your list before you get to it, you still may reference it, but use different song clips.

If you’re more singles-oriented, you may post top singles from either of those years.

"Les Choristes", one of my favorite French films, came out in 2004. It's the story of a teacher who loves music relegated to a brutal boys' school, and how he wins over even the hardest kids by teaching them to sing. A tear jerker, if you like that kind of film.

I don’t love every bit of this LP, but the best stuff is on the band’s top shelf, I think.

Limiting my selections, to allow others to add — I know we have a few WilcoFanatics here. As hard as it is, I'll omit at least one of my favorite tracks, if nobody grabs it, I’ll add later.

—> Opening track -- production on this is outstanding … gritty and “claustrophobic” on the verse, then on the chorus, it “opens” and seems “optimistic.” At least that's how I interpret it. (Actually, full LP has a good production value).

A couple tracks from Alannis Morissette's So-Called Chaos album in 2004.

First up, "Eight Easy Steps". The video was a retrospective of her career showing clips of previous music videos and even home videos back to her as a baby, but digitally manipulated to have her "singing" Steps the whole time. Pretty entertaining, especially the moments from her time as the "Debbie Gibson of Canada". The song went to number 27 on Billboard's Adult Pop Airplay chart and number 3 on the Dance Singles Sales chart.



Second is "Everything". It stalled at 76 on the Hot 100, but went to number 1 on the Hot Adult Alternative chart.

2004 was the bitter end of musicians recording and selling their own music on a physical product. History will determine whether that was a step forward or a dead end. Has popular music gotten better,....?
