Williams & Blum: The Florida State / Clemson conversation

At this point why would the big ten and sec want Florida state? It is too messy for them.
They don't. Florida State is letting their boosters' anger about getting left out last year lead them to a TERRIBLE decision.

Feels like the SEC is more than content with their 16 (and they should be, it's a great league that makes geographic sense) and the Big 10 is great where they are unless something crazy happens where they have to take 3 more to get Notre Dame to jump.

If the ACC blows up, the Big Ten is taking Virginia, North Carolina and Duke/GT/Miami in order to get Notre Dame to jump. If Notre Dame isn't a part of it, the Big Ten is full.

I was 100% on board with those comments until the unequal revenue sharing part. I've always said If you want to be a member of a conference then be a member. Just the fact the Clemson and FSU are leaving because they don't get a bigger piece of the pie makes me not even want to answer their phone call.
It's not that they want unequal per se, they just want more money.

The problem in the ACC as current, is that they can't get more money without it being unequal.

The NFL in terms of equal revenue share is NEVER going to be duplicated at the college level on a long-term basis. It just simply is not. How many years until the Big Ten shows Rutgers and Maryland the door? You think Alabama and LSU are happy splitting the same piece of the pie as Vanderbilt and Miss St?

Elimate the NCAA, hire one giant league commissioner, get back to geographical conferences with deep rooted rivalries. The only way to make it work for the long-term is to figure out the revenue. Im sorry but Notre Dame, USC and Texas bring more to the table than Pitt, NC State and Texas Tech. They deserve to be compensated accordingly. Call it trickle down economics if you will. Whats good for the top teams (the rich) is good for us all (middle/lower class). There has to be a path towards fair revenue distribution. If the elites are not happy there will ALWAYS be unrest.

fun hypothetical.
If FSU, Clemson, VT, NC State, Pitt, Louisville , Miami, WVU, and kstate broke away and formed a new league, and ISU was invited, would you say aye or nay?

A nay would mean remaining in a 13 team league with cinn. houston, and arz state and baylor. although uconn could be added to get to 14.

Only if Iowa State gets a higher % distribution and its own network. ;)

VA Tech to the SEC maybe. I don't see them in the Big 10. Virginia, Pitt, UNC, Duke, Georgia Tech, Syracuse and maybe even Miami seem like they would be invited over VA Tech. Just my opinion.
Va tech doesn’t really bring anything to the table for either the big ten or sec and honestly doesn’t bring much to the Big12. Good academics but extremely average sports performance in revenue sports.

Only one conference has ever had unequal revenue sharing and how did that work out?

Your statement about what is good for the top (getting paid more) being good for the middle/lower class is one of the stupidest things I’ve heard on here and has never been proven true in sports or in life

Virginia Tech historically is a strong football brand. Stronger than UVa. With a great fan following, 70K seat stadium, and one of the best entrances in college football. They’d be a great fit in the SEC. A better fit than UVa imo.

Agree with the historical part but like a lot of schools once their legendary coach left they have been extremely average. In the SEC they might only win 1 conference game a year depending on their schedule.

100% agree better fit then UVA, I can’t see them going SEC at all but who knows in this chaos.

Virginia seems like an absolute perfect fit for the BIG. Definitely be able to put Michigan in their place academically.

VT has won 4 acc titles since it joined in 2003. miami has won zero. Clemson 8(all time). I think VT has won more than FSU counting acc titles whenVT was in the acc.

VT has a passionate fanbase, fills a 70,000 seat stadium, and with sec money would be a force. it is also in a great recruiting area and has viewership across the entire state and a major presence in the DC market.

I hope im wrong. Would love VT in the big 12.

You know what VT and KSU have in common, they are 2 of the 3 power four teams that have never won anything, ever. 0 national titles in anything. The other is UCF and they just became power 4. I don’t think VT or KSU really turns the needle

I hear VT brought up somewhat regularly by national CFB media, but it's typically in a nostalgic sort of way about what they once were and how amazing Lane Stadium is when VT has a good team.

That said, I think they're the sort of program that could garner a good deal of national attention if they ever become competitive again. But that's a big if.

VT is actually a fine program and would be a good add.

36k students, $1.7B endowment. That program brand value thing from a couple years ago had them around 30th, which would be towards the top of Big12 schools.

Don't let recent struggles dominate the evaluation. When they've had a good coach, they've been good. Good sized, passionate fan base. Not a sleeping giant, but more like a sleeping really tall guy. They are VERY similar to ISU, WV, Texas Tech in many ways.

They're not FSU/Clemson on the S-tier, but they are in the next level.

VT was at their peak when they had Beamer Ball with Michael and Marcus Vick. They played for a national championship in the ‘00 Sugar Bowl. They were good when I was a kid (I’m in early 30s), but I don’t think they’re really a factor for the casual fan anymore. Heck, James Madison probably has the best college football team in the state of Virginia right now.

That said, I’d have them in the XII with open arms. Engineering school, fans who care and show up, a cool campus in a college town (Blacksburg), and an awesome away game at Lane Stadium.

Re-read my previous message and it sounded more down on VT than I meant it to. I'd love to have them in the conference. Rabid fan base, Blacksburg is supposed to be a great college town, and it wouldn't hurt to have one of the "best entrances in CFB" in the XII.

They may not ever return to their peak (which was my previous point) but I think they'd fight right in and would elevate the conference. On top of that, I want the XII to gather up every named rivalry like infinity stones and adding the Black Diamond would be wonderful.

I'd love VTech. They fit perfectly with the rest of the Big12 schools imo. I know some VT alum and they hate Virginia. I think it's similar to us and Iowa in that Virginia looks down on Tech because they're an ag and engineering school

VT is on a clear #2 tier with NC State and Miami (and Miami badly needs a new on campus FB stadium).

Louisville and Pitt noticeably lag behind those 3 and I would have both Duke and GTech ahead of those two.
