Yeah, if you're only increasing revenue by $3mil/yr per school and changing your whole brand name/legacy/image, that's a big risk. While people adapt, there is value in the name "Big 12".

Now, if you're talking about $10mil/yr per school, that's a different discussion.

On one hand, we're screwed because the only way to increase revenue is by either selling rights (i.e. name) or getting in bed with private equity. People need to realize that Private Equity is awesome for startups, but is like a cash advance for a large enterprise. They either cut costs to increase profits or they wait until the value is high and sell... at which point the "Allstate 12 Sponsored by Dr Pepper" won't get that increased value, the PE firm does.

On the other hand, we're falling further behind the big dogs far more than people realize. It isn't just the big dollar amount of the media deal, it's also going to be iterative gaps like playoff payout, etc that keep adding extra $5mil/yr here and $4mil/yr there, etc. That means that what $3mil/yr means to Iowa State is peanuts for what it means for Iowa. That means we have to do things that would normally feel gross in order to keep the gap somewhat manageable.

You now calculate another $22mil/yr out of the AD budget and bam, massive gap. You think that $22mil/yr is going to be made up by increased donors at a school like Iowa State? Think again. The P1 will be more likely to backfill. That ignores the fact that NIL is never going away - it is endorsement money that is largely beyond regulation/limitations.

The only other option is the P2 stops trying to compete with the P1 and accepts it's basically now Division 2 - which sucks too.

The SEC and Big 10 will eventually do the same. Money is God.
Yeah, at the end of the day, the Big 12 (conference to be named later) will still be behind because they will just do what we do and get more moola

Speaking of disengagement, college sports is getting easier to disengage from with each passing day.

Yep. Except, it's hard to abandon our guys and gals wearing the Cardinal and Gold.

If it's not Iowa State sports, I don't watch college athletics. Never have. So, I'm out anyway, I guess. But so hard not to support Cyclone athletes.

Here's what I find so darned confusing. I, of course, am only speaking for myself. I had never heard of Iowa State until my Junior year in high school when I started searching for Architectural schools. Repeat: I'd never heard of them. Of course, 'proximity' to your NFL team was the KEY to favoritism back then. Had I not attended Iowa State, I like the vast majority in Chicagoland, would not care.

This is what perplexes me about this now being a business with, currently, unlimited boundaries. How on earth will Iowa State be able to market itself against more densely populated areas? 'Parity' has to, IMO, be built into a model for this to work. Otherwise, it's a temporary cash grab and well over half of the Universities will suffer. Even gambling will suffer if no parity is built in. Some entity has to reign in the chaos.

A very similar proposal (also including CVC) happened in German soccer this year. Fans were adamantly against it, to the point of purposely stopping/delaying games by throwing chocolate coins and tennis balls onto the field (among many other protests). Fan pressure eventually got the clubs/leagues to cave and not go through with it.

we could throw dildos on to the field

The European fan bases are the gold standard for stopping things like Super Leagues, private equity, etc.
Throw old Chizek coins on the field....

Not the first time this has been done. It’s common in professional soccer in Europe.
- Premier League (England’s top soccer) was getting £40 annually from Barclay’s when it was the Barclay’s Premier League.
- Mexico has BBVA Liga MX. The bank has pumped over $150M into the league from 2013-2024.
- France has Ligue 1 Uber Eats, taking in €15M annually
- Spain has La Liga EA Sports. They get €30M annually
- Italy has Serie A TIM, with TIM having paid the league about $21M annually

See this sentiment constantly, yet it never seems to actually happen.

People’s allegiance to their school runs deep. The industry knows it.

I think what is on people’s minds is how far CFB can push the envelope before they start losing revenue/ratings/interest. Clearly we haven’t arrived at that point yet.

This seems potentially and eventually bad in my simple brain. Can anyone smarter than me explain how this could end up a good thing?

Yeah, what are the pros and cons here?
