Frank Santana, pre 2000, was he from Cuba? 190# I think?
Yes, 3-time NCAA finalist, 1976-1978. He was originally from Cuba.

"The family of three-time All-American Frank Santana escaped in 1961, after his father was 'encouraged' to give up real estate holdings to 'benefit' the government. The Santanas fled, but troops caught up with them where they hoped to launch a vessel in order to escape the island. The resulting firefight killed the clan’s oldest son. Frank’s father eventually sent his remaining two sons and wife to Skokie, Illinois. …”

I first heard of this at Cyclone wrestling camp in 1976 (maybe 1977) from Frank Santana.

There were a lot of kids there. After gathering everyone at the beginning, we broke out into smaller groups, which we stayed in for the rest of the camp. Each group was led by one Cyclone wrestler and one coach, though there were more helping out. Our group was in the old Cyclone wrestling room in Beyer Hall (while the others were on the basketball courts). It was led by Santana along with long-time Cyclone assistant coach Les Anderson.

Santana was well known then having finished 2nd nationally as a sophomore. He was very personable, friendly, with little jokes or asides now and then, like a college student.

He told us about coming to the U.S. as a little kid — like keep down keep down — in a boat.

I didn't know until reading this that his brother was killed and his father died when Frank was seven.

Don’t believe Osmany will wrestle folkstyle for 4 years. Hoping he goes for 2 years which allows Castillo to redshirt when he gets here to grow into 125
How long has he been in Ames training? UWW says he’s 22 which is pretty old to just get started in folkstyle. I remember how many years it took AE to finally catch on and start winning big matches and he wrestled high school in the United States /folkstyle. If he only plans to go 2 years he must be years ahead of AE on development?

All I’ve heard is he is very close to Reineri level, and Reineri is a step ahead of Ech and Yonger. People in the building are very confident Reineri wouldve been a national champ if he got eligibility for that semester, and he wasn’t in the states training very long and the staff knew he had what it took. Mat wrestling comes easier to some than others

Looks like we got Jake Varner 2.0
