I wouldn't ever pay my own money for a graduate degree. My wife has an MBA and as far as I can tell it's never actually done anything for her career but we didn't pay for it. I'm going back for a Masters certification in Systems Engineering at Caltech in the fall which is a year long program not a full blown degree but I'm not paying for it out of pocket either. Assuming I don't get caught up in the Deere salary employee bloodbath that started today.

The fact that most employers now won’t cover the full cost kind of tells you everything you need to know.

My 2 year anniversary is Thursday and I'm using up last of my vacation until then. Not checking anything so I at least get another 2 weeks severance. Can't lay me off if they can't find me.

Psa never be loyal to an organization. It will only be used against you.

I work for a privately owned firm that treats employees well and rewards longevity. I have no plans to leave. But even then, I still keep an eye out for similar jobs to have a backup plan should something change.

If you work for a publicly traded megacorp you should absolutely be prepared to pivot.

Amen to that! Best career move was to a different company. When you get passed over for a job because "you're too valuable" in your current role but don't get grade change promotions to bump salary accordingly....it is past time.

Yep, you are either an owner or a cost at the end of the day. Especially in the AI new world.

I predict there will be more small companies in the future as a result of people waking up to this. Far too many work for large corporations and aren't getting pay raises that match real inflation, not the manipulation headlines.

Boy, I've seen that play before. May have lived it. Leaving was best career move. Probably should have done it yrs earlier but lack of promotion and "you're not ready yet" had me believing I couldn't succeed elsewhere. 2nd psa, bet on yourself.

100% this. If I could teach my 25 year old self one lesson, that would be it. I spent more than a decade being loyal to an employer, and it cost me. They were a good employer, too. They treated employees well and I got some great experience. I have nothing bad to say about them. I had no intention of ever leaving, until 4 years ago I was contacted by a recruiter. I wasn't interested, until she started throwing around numbers, and I realized that loyalty is a wonderful thing, but save it for your friends and family and sports teams, not your employer. Even a good one won't compensate you better than a new position at a new company will. That's the best way to play the game.

Now, my thought is to stay at a place for a max of 3 years. Give them the best work I can in that time, and then parlay it to a better position. Just keep moving forward. There's no reason to be sentimental about it. It's a mercenary world. Pretending that it's not will only hurt you.

Yeah I'm coming up on 8 years in a couple weeks. My wife has been here for 16 so even if I survive the Ag engineering cuts her org hasn't started with their turn cutting yet. Tractor engineering lost some legends yesterday and they're not done yet in Waterloo.

I told somebody else that yesterday because I had planned on taking the afternoon off to go watch my son's baseball game in Dubuque. Can't fire me if you can't find me mother effers.

My first job out of college I had a manager call me an "anchor". I couldn't do other things because the department would have to replace me.

Uh huh...

Anchors fall to the bottom of the sea, baby.

The Ag sector is in an unpredictable time. Commodity prices have dropped and that has cut farm income heavily. Throw in that this year there are good chunks of Iowa that are underwater and/or not even planted yet. So it doesn't look like it will rebound immediately. The pork industry is hurting now also.

Then look to the future and if EVs do take off (or if the 2030 timeline is pushed like was mentioned in the last Presidental election cycle), demand for ethanol will drop and that will tailspin the farm economy even more.

Interest rates also working against machinery sales right now.
