I'm always a sucker for a isu mbb scheduling debate.

But it seems to me, quite often, that we forget it takes two to tango.

WHY would any top team schedule US?

You think Shaka is going to let TJ come into wisconsin and showcase our program??

You think any blue blood wants to travel to Iowa in December?

What's in it for THEM?
yeah, we're probably never getting Duke or Kentucky to come to Ames on a home & home series

but i'd imagine you could get the following programs or ones of similar stature

  • Saint Marys
  • San Diego State
  • Missouri (done already)
  • Colorado State
  • Wake Forest (Steve Forbes iowa connection)
  • Virginia (maybe with the Otz / Bennet connection)
  • Dayton
  • Boise State

i think people want less swac type teams and more, maybe, mac type teams.

i don't have any issues with our schedule.

KSU last year scheduled South Dakota State and Oral Roberts in addition to
USC, Miami (FL), Providence, Villanova, Nebraska, LSU and Wichita St.

i dont think ISU needs 7 high major games like KSU scheduled but a mid major "power" like SDSU or ORU would be a welcome addition

Another issue with 1 bid conference type schools people need to consider. All those schools go on the road for almost all of their non conference schedule to play big schools to make the money they need to survive.

That's alot of games that need to get filled by someone even by valley type schools.

Feel bad for the season ticket holders. We'll be sluggish, the SWAC teams will bomb away and miss, and we'll pull away in the 2nd half. Yawn.

As if we haven't always had games like this on the schedule going back decades. Any season ticket holder who isn't expecting multiple teams like this on the schedule hasn't been paying attention.

Plus we're adding a conference home game to the schedule, so there's a net benefit to season ticket holders

And we've got Marquette here. That's a nice benefit.

Would you prefer ISU play someone good and take a home loss as long as it's exciting for the season ticket holders but bad for the team?

Do you actually feel bad for people that choose to buy season tickets knowing that most home games before January are going to super easy wins like ISU has done for...ever?

Yep. Some of the wealthier schools and blue bloods might schedule a little tougher (they can afford to buy games and the blue bloods play games vs each other that don't end up hurting them when they lose because theyre both blue bloods) but even they play a certain number of total slappy games.

Last season Kansas opened with Fort Hays State (D2 exh), followed with NC-Central (253) Manhattan (337), Eastern Illinois (320) Kansas City (214)

Duke opened the season last year with an exhibition game vs UNC-Pembroke (D2), and followed it with KP 336 dartmouth. They also played Bucknell (276), La Salle (195) and Southern Indiana (328), Charlotte (105), Hofstra (113), and Queens (269)
I'm not saying play P5s or even Missouri Valley level teams, but it would be nice get most of those gimme games in the 150-250 range. I would like to avoid having close to all of our gimme's be sub 300.

ISU also really wasn't very good at the time.

Imo that tournament was a great gauge to use to tweak some things and provide good film etc. and a couple of players were very different after (in a good way).

It seemed calculated and long term, we saw a 2 seed emerge out of it.
one of the reasons there were not good for that tournament is they were not battle tested at all. The other reason is Ward was out.

To 99% of people those games are essentially the same game. They're games vs teams no one gives a **** about.

Its one of the many reasons ncsos is such a garbage metric. To a tournament level team those are essentially the same game when looking at WAB

I mean we were also down Ward, and I don't think at the time we appreciated how big of a loss that was. And we lost him right before that tournament so there was really little time to adjust to him being out
and the talking heads never brought up the Ward factor when they were trashing our non con schedule. They never took that into consideration when they made us the last 2 seed. We should have been in another bracket. Oh well, it's not the first time th committee screwed us.

As a basketball season ticket holder for over a decade, I am fully aware that our non-con usually has a bunch of cupcakes, and I have no problem with the upcoming schedule.

Besides, we are adding more conference games now, and our overall strength of schedule will be one of the best in the nation.

If they had a decent opponent prior to that they probably still play about the same unless TJ finds a week to work out some things like Cujo's shot selection, Gilbert's drives, etc.

They still had a tremendous season and twenty or thirty point wins over slightly better OOC teams vs. forty pointers doesn't change that.

It will be entertaining on here if ISU drops more non-con, or conference games next year or if someone gets hurt against Marquette and people complain that TJ should have scheduled lighter.
