McCarney was popular as he was a great interview, he finally beat Iowa and won the first bowl game, but he only had a few good teams. Generally, his teams weren't very good, just better than the 80s. Chiz and CPR had near the same facilities they have now.

Coach Mac was great. But generally we only had a shot at decent records when we avoided Texas and Oklahoma 2 out of every 4 years because we were in the North Division. 2003 season was absolutely brutal. Winless in conference.

No ISU coach has had the support, facilities, and money he has. This Big12 is nothing compared to the legacy Big12, or most of the Big8 years.

And so does every other program.

3x Big 12 coach of the year (never done before), best conference record in school history, conference title game appearance, Iowa State has a winner conference record 6 times since 1990 and Campbell has FIVE of those, and he’s the basically tied for the winningest coach in the last 100+ years of Iowa State football.

If that doesn’t qualify as best coach in program history, who does???? Are you delusional?

He made some bad decisions hiring assistants after that first group with Loney and them left. I think that is why he couldn't sustain success.

How the **** do you know? When I'm in the area I always go to games. Im still paying back student loans to the school so forgive me If I don't feel like making donations to the athletic department. I'm not as wealthy as you apparently.

Do you think the gap in our facilities are equal or worse than they were 20, 30, 40 years ago?

We opened Bergstrom in the early 2000s and have been opening and upgrading facilities ever since.

Also in that time our conference is going to lose OU, Texas, Nebby, ATM, and Mizzou. They are replaced by TCU, WVU, Cincy, BYU, UCF, and Houston. That has left a conference makeup that is much easier to keep up with financially than what we were looking at 20 years ago.

Yes. Good coaches like to be paid well. Poor coaches have less options and generally can be hired for less money. Staff retention helps. Mac got more support from JP. But we regressed again in 2006. And Mac voluntarily stepped down for the good of the program. Love Coach Mac.

We are regressing now and you seem to think everything is fine. Even if McCarney didn't have a lot of money for assistants his first staff(with the same salaries) was way better than the guys that followed.
