Peace Tree is for sale

A few thoughts:

Dangerous Man-That's a shocker to me. I only went one time but they made some great stouts and porters. Their logo and beers actually remind me of Bearded Brewer out of Omaha. From what I had, BB was better.

Peace Tree-I liked both taprooms. My wife loves Blond Fatale with only Tank 7 being her favorite in that category. On my "Metro beer tiers", I put them as a C. I could usually find something that was surprisingly good there. They had a Coffee Stout, Cold Brew Stout, and a few Gose's that were decent. Royale 41 was the only decent IPA I ever had from them. Hopefully someone good picks them up.

Global brew-I really miss Global Brew, they had a good selection and it was usually pretty quiet. I use to like the Hall a lot and they still have a decent selection. People with kids seem to like the Hall. The Cheese Shop is one that falls under the radar but is really good. Uptown garage in Ankeny has a decent selection and you can read the newspaper from the 70's while you pee, which is a big plus.

Singlespeed-The new DSM location is pretty cool. Parking is a little challenging, it's not huge, and the beers they had on tap were average. It was early so I'll give them time. I like their Waterloo tap room.

Toppling Goliath-I still can't believe on their location selection. I hope it works out well for them. At least it's better than the location that they were considering on Ingersoll, which would have been a parking nightmare.

I agree with the others that say there are just too many average breweries poping up. I wouldn't be surprised if Firetrucker isn't far behind. I haven't been to Fenders in forever but they may have staying power since they have no competition. If it was based on beer I like, Kinship would have closed down a month after they opened.

Yep, Kinship is alive for three reasons:

1) No close competition in Waukee
2) Access to the bike trail
3) Dog park

The most interesting part is that they have no plan to close the tap rooms. What that tells me is they get plenty of people in the door, but they don’t sell well in the liquor store, and can’t justify the brewing operation as it exists.

Another data point in my theory that being a production brewery at the state wide level is a much harder venture than being the neighborhood tap house.

I was able to stop by when I was back in IA this weekend - was happy to see they still had their Fatale and Red Rambler on tap.

It’d be nice if they found a way to keep a couple of their flagships going, but that statement doesn’t sound like it. Going for a Global Brew style taproom? They have a nice space in DSM.

I could see that. They were well known for Blonde Fatale, but if I’m going to the store to pick up something for a game or get together, I’m likely not picking an 8% beer. Don’t think enough people knew about their other options.

I used to like both of those beers a lot, but they got buried by TG, Big Grove, Singlespeed, West O, Confluence, and others who distribute around the state.

Being that close to Iowa Taproom can't help. Although, their location is pretty cool and not as busy.

I can't think of the last time I bought something at the store under 6%. About once a year I'll buy a 12 pack of Coors for the rare times where we've drank to much and need to finish with something light

Though given the taproom is staying open it doesnt sound like iowa taproom is hurting things from a traffic standpoint. Though that area still has some developing to do.

Barntown is pretty close. They have better beer too. BT has moved to the seltzer craze though. They make some great traditional beers but can't churn them out fast enough with their small facility.

For at home, yes I like something stronger.

If I was going somewhere where I need to drive home, I usually try to go lighter.

I'm not surprised that some breweries are closing since that was a bubble waiting to burst but surprised Peace Tree is in particular, I thought they were more popular but maybe not.
I can see in the near distant future where 3 or so major brands reign supreme over the state with multiple taprooms throughout the state and these smaller breweries go out of business.
It seems like you either have to be a neighborhood micro brewery with one location in a good spot or a big brewery with multiple locations.

There are so many that I love. I know one of the main brewers pretty well he was a bar tender for a while. I would go a lot. They just can't make that stuff in large enough quantities or fast enough. I miss their traditional sours. They were all so amazing.

Funny, I'm about the opposite.

I've really gone lighter the last few years and go with more of the Coors Light variety vs. micros.
