My state school educated ass read that as “Ivy BOCDHPY” and wondered what that phrase meant

I want to say about a decade ago, I read an article where Cal was having issues maintaining their stadium and it was basically falling apart. There is also the issue of earthquakes that they had to make updates for as well.
It literally has a major fault line running damn near down the center of the field.

They spent about $500M on the retrofit/upgrades and a new sport’s performance center about 10 years ago.

Lack of investment isn’t the reason Cal has been bad the last few years.

For that matter, it isn’t lack of talent either (this year was the first time in 50s years where a former Bear didn’t play in the Super Bowl two seasons in a row).

They’ve struggled for the same reason most schools go through periods of struggling: Running a successful D-I football program is ******* hard.

Feels like everything jumped ahead 5 years today. B1G made a move for their future. I’m okay with BY moving the next chess pieces. The man has a vision and he’s proven thus far he’s worth trusting. If anything he’s punching first and he’s punching hard.

Surprising.

But maybe the selling point is money on the academic side.
I know people keep talking about conferences and research dollars. But athletic conference has zero impact on research dollars. People that make that connection are wrong. The big 10 research alliance gets cited, but if you look at their site it’s basically economies of scale in subscriptions and purchasing. Based on their reports their savings come out to a few hundred thousand $ per institution. They state something like “over $X in research.” That’s just the sum of research dollars garnered by Big 10 institutions.

The athletic conference you are in has no effect on research dollars. That’s not at all how it works. ISU could move to the Big 10 and it would have zero effect on research dollars. Almost all competitive research dollars are developed at the grass roots. It’s individual faculty with ideas that collaborate with colleagues at other schools that are complimentary. They don’t give two ***** what athletic conference the school is in.

I think these Presidents etc, just like being affiliated with the other high profile schools. ASU liked being affiliated with Stanford. They all claim that affiliation somehow gave them a better image, and more money, but most of all it was all just about optics.

I think 1 protected rivalry def makes sense in these crazy huge conferences not just for history but to build passion and relationships...two is pushing it with only 9 games but I'd be in favor. Three seems like overkill and can really start to affect the schedule strength unfairly in either direction.

In FB I really would like to keep Farmageddon. I'd like to play KU home and away every yr in MBB. Yeah I know this yr we play them once and in Hilton, but I like the KU-ISU series even if KU doesn't consider it a true rivalry.
