***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Cubs are evidently involved in discussions for Brooks Raley from the Mets. Contract lasts through 2026.

Pete Alonso is also reportedly available. Contract would last through next year.

Mervis, Davis, Canario get it done?
I don't think that gets it done, but I'd do it in a heartbeat. Which is what makes me think its too light.

Ross says to expect Candelario playing more first base than third base; Cubs metrics believe he is a better fit there.

Matt Shaw has debuted at rookie ball. Through 3 games, he's 4-8 with a double and dong, 2 steals and 2 walks. He's played SS 2 games, DH'd the other. He's now on his way to South Bend.

Candelario was saying during his pregame interview learning how to play in this league was an adjustment but now that he's learned how to do the right things, he feels really good about where he's at.

Looking through his Baseball Savant page, remove his first two years in the league, he's never been an elite bat, but I would argue his year right now isn't an anomaly compared to his last 4 years, he's just been an unfortunate product of having to play at Comerica. His only analytically poor year since 2020 was 2022. In 2021 he hit 16 homeruns but would've had 29 homers if playing in 4 other ballparks.

Reason for posting this is I'm curious how much of this is a tryout to see if we can have someone play the corners on the cheap next year.

I could see them platoon Madrigal and Mervis then use Candelario at both positions. Do the same thing with Bellinger platooning PCA and Suzuki. Of course they have to resign the pending free agents.

What are the terms of Suzuki's contract? How expensive would it be for the Cubs to dump him? I think with Fukudome and now Suzuki, maybe the Cubs should take a pass from now on with outfielders from Japan not named Ohtani (yes, I know Ohtani no longer plays in the OF).

We can't afford to release him. Could trade him, but he would need to accept it having a full no trade clause.

Seiya and Shohei are good friends in real life. I would guess Seiya is used to reel in Ohtani.

So how much $$ are the Cubs on the hook for with Suzuki? Tbh, he just isn't very good. Certainly not enough production for a corner OF.

After this year, he's owed $60 million over the next 3 years.

I'd like to see what he could do if he could just focus on the bat and play an occasional RF.

You get Bellinger back and you can provide Suzuki that opportunity. Problem is his buddy Ohtani would be taking the DH spot.

Woof. So it's Heyward RF dead money all over again. Well, the good news is, Rickett's is a billionaire, it's not our money, etc...But still very discouraging.

Suzuki’s slugging percentage is .388 which is the lowest on the team (200+ at bats). A guy with that low of a slugging percentage can’t be hitting in the top 2/3 of the lineup. Maybe bat him 8th?
