Movies from your youth that helped shape you

Well my dad let me watch Stripes and apparently forgot about the shower scene and the mud wrestling part.
Dad and I (13) went to the Forest City Theater to watch this movie. The scene where Bill Murray and the girl climb out of the hope chest after sex and Bill says "well that was interesting" my Dad burst out in laughter.

Still brings a smile to my face :)

ET. I watched it religiously as a child. When my parents were pregnant with my brother they asked if I had any name suggestions and I said Elliott. They loved it and used it for his middle name. Fast forward 30 years and I named my daughter Elliott after her original name fell through because of popularity.

It's an unusual name for a girl, but it fits her like a glove.

Penis breath was my go to insult for much of elementary school.

Animal House.

Also, the seen in Fast Times at Ridgemont high with Phoebe Cates shows her amazing rack.

Cobra, American ninja, predator, commando, bloodsport, red Dawn, thrasher, rad, natinaol lampoons, Ferris bueller
Maybe I just had terrible or awesome parents, or maybe times were different. But I went to Red Dawn at like 7 years old, and my Dad and I went to Arnold and other action movies when I was pretty young. Going to R movies when we were 10 was like a normal thing for my friends and I. Bet I watched Predator, Young Guns, Terminator and Aliens a hundred times each as a kid. My older sister used to make fun of me because I even (sort of) could speak the Russian lines in Red Dawn.

And Top Gun was for girls. This is what real 10 year old man liked:

Apocalypse Now - saw his when I was at ISU

Gave me a sense of the Vietnam war.

Years later, I visited an uncle who had been in the war. We got to talking about it and he said that "essentially war is boring." I'll never forget that. I didn't think the war would have been exciting, but certainly not boring.

Then years after that, I had a guy that reported to me that was a Vietnam war vet. He didn't say alot about it though. He had a ton of health issues (heart-related) that he attributed to Agent Orange. He was at hamburger hill or knew folks that were - I can't remember. He told a story where hes feet didn't get dry for days as they were in some jungle. A really nice guy and I saw upfront the damage that war did to people.

I wore out these vhs tapes as a little kid (some real, some copies):
Star Wars Trilogy
Indiana Jones Trilogy
Ferris Bueller
Willy Wonka
European Vacation
The Goonies

In high school I stumbled into some movies that would make me more of a film nerd for life:
Goodfellas/Casino
Kubrick films
Coppola films (Dracula in theater)
Bottle Rocket (intro to independent films)
Reservoir Dogs
Il Postino (intro to foreign films)

The video rental store was really a window to a bigger world for a 90s teen in a small town.

Am I the first person to say Karate Kid? What the heck is wrong with you people!?

I learned the F word from seeing risky business on HBO. I remember quoting it and being shocked when everybody got mad.

There are a lot from that time. I saw that in theater. Somehow wasn’t in my set of vhs that got played a million times. Gremlins is another.

Jurassic Park

I saw it in theaters when I was 5 or 6.

Most terrifying thing I've ever seen in my life. I had nightmares for years.

My teacher in 7th grade brought in the book and said we’d all be obsessed with this movie in a year and recommended the book to us. I actually did want to read it but didn’t, then when I saw the movie remember thinking maybe a teacher can actually be cool.

In the theater that first long neck Dinosaur was a “whoa” moment.

I don't remember the ambient wonder phase of that film.

I mostly remember the T. Rex attack.

And the kitchen scene with the raptors.

And the jump scare with Samuel L's arm.

Small child @Sigmapolis was terrified of the dark because he thought that's where the raptors hid.
