***Official 2023 Chicago Cubs Thread***

Hindsight probably should of cut Rios loose instead of Torrens but neither will be on the roster come 2024 so Amaya gets a look.

Yeah that was just bad luck they just DFA Torrens last week but can't predict when injuries like this would happen. Guess Rios will be gone here soon once they decide its time to bring up Morel or Mervis. I don't know what else they want Morel to prove at this point at AAA. He's just mashing the ball so may as well call him up soon and start using him as super utility guy. Can easily get him some regular starts since he can play just about anywhere on the field so if Ross doesn't like a matchup or needs to give a guy a day off there should be plenty of AB for him to get regular time.

Both catchers are signed through next year so I think Amaya gets all of 23 and at least half of 24 in Iowa for seasoning.
This is his last option year. He's got to be up full time next year so you've got to get him to the point where he's ready. The injuries just killed his clock.

Lot of prospects ready and not enough spots.

Amaya likely takes Barnhart because Gomes is the guy you want paired with the rookie and we have too many guys being held back to carry 3 catchers.

Morel.likely sends Rios packing in the next month.

Mervis will do the same Hosmer.

PCA gets Bullinger's spot in 2024.

B Davis or Canario eventually replace Mancini.

That's a ton of talent waiting in the wings.

Would you offer an extension to Belli, given his recent success, perhaps on a 2-3 yr deal or put your cards on and wait for PCA?

Pretty spot on assessment there. Can pull the plug on the Rios experiment any day now IMO. Hasn't shown me anything to make me think he's worth holding onto longer. Hosmer hasn't been terrible but is serviceable enough they haven't had an immediate reason to bring Mervis up yet. The longer Morel and Mervis keep hitting the way they are right now the harder it is going to be not to make the necessary moves to get them into the Chicago lineup.

If the Cubs weren't so loaded with OF prospects would love to bring Bellinger back on a deal the way he's played so far. As far as this offseason goes though I hope they use all the resources they can to make a serious bid for Ohtani as he fills 2 needs with just one roster spot. Every team in the league that wants to compete for a championship should be making a pitch to him as he's a unique generational talent. You get the chance to sign a guy that can be your Ace and a solid bat at 3rd or 4th in your lineup plus the added marketability boost you get for signing a player of his caliber.

Assuming he keeps at or near his current pace, I'd offer something like 3/$80M. Gets him big time paid now and makes him a free agent at 30 where he can cash in again and it gives the Cubs flexibility when the next batch of kids are going to start to get expensive.

If PCA ends up being the real deal, you have a gold glove first baseman and Mervis is a full time DH.

C Amaya
1B Bellinger
2B Hoerner
SS Swanson
3B Wisdom
LF Happ
CF PCA
RF Suzuki
DH Mervis

Bench-Morel, Davis, C, INF

That group looks like one that can play deep into October

Bellinger will command a big multi year contract if he continues his current pace. Would love to have him but with Mervis and PCA the money is probably spent better elsewhere.

If you have followed the voice of the Iowa Cubs @ VoiceOfCohen on Twitter, he had to create a new account because of hackers. If you haven't followed him in the past, it's a good way to keep up on the next Chicago Cubs in the pipeline

You're both right. The Bellinger lineup is a very good one. It's probably (longterm) just as good with PCA, but he accounted for both young guys you mentioned.

Now, because we're supposed to mention Otani this year, change Bellinger to Otani and just go nuts.

That's the lineup I want to see

C Gomes & Amaya
1B Mervis
2B Hoerner
3B Wisdom & Madrigal
SS Swanson
LF Happ
CF PCA
RF Suzuki
DH Ohtani
UTL Morel
OF Velasquez
OF Canario or Davis (Mancini may delay this spot a year)

Add a closer this year at the deadline.

Have to agree with Brett on this: The Cubs Don't Need Saviors, They Just Need to Use Their Best Players (bleachernation.com) Got 2 guys hitting the crap out of the ball at Iowa right now that are ready and could be better options than Rios and Hosmer are. Rios still has minor league option so there isn't much reason why he can't just be sent to Iowa to bring up Morel. I get the complication with the Hosmer situation but if you have a chance to be in the mix for a playoff spot you gotta play the best guys now and if Mervis can provide offense that Hosmer can't you gotta either find a way to get him to Chicago 1 way or another whether that is cutting Hosmer or finding another way to fit him onto the roster without cutting Hosmer. Either you commit to trying to compete this year or you lay out a plan on how this rebuild is going to play out this season with some timelines. Fans aren't blind, they see the talent on the field in Chicago and Iowa and see these winnable games slip away and wonder why moves have not happened yet.

Obvious move is to option Rios and bring up Morel but I wouldn't be surprised if they do Mervis for Rios 1st that way you can hold on to Hosmer a bit longer as insurance.

The question I've been pondering today is deadline closer. Doubt he'd be available but would you be willing to part with Davis for a rental like Hader? With Happ being extended we have a bit of a log jam. Dealing Davis gives you a couple years before The Jaguar is knocking on the door to play left. We'd still have PCA, Velasquez and Canario ready or soon to be and Cassie and Alcantara (Jaguar ) moving through the system.

Is rios over 5 years service time? Not that I'd be said to lose him

That's a tough one, depends on where the Cubs are at in the standings at the deadline. Definitely a logjam of OF in the system and of all them Davis given his injury history would probably be the one I'd be OK with trading if it brought in a piece like a closer that could be a difference maker. Just not sure if this team is good enough yet to make a move like that which is why I'd like to see Morel and Mervis up sooner than later to know what kind of ceiling this team might have this year. Lately not sure if closer is as big of an issue as finding some guys consistent enough to hold a lead to get to the closer. Had some good starts wasted recently by the bullpen at times. It probably will eventually sort itself out as lot of young arms in that bullpen as well as some veterans not pitching up to their usual too.

Hard to win consistently when you refuse to use your best 26 players...
Truth is they probably aren't a playoff team this year so it's in their best interest to wait on Mervis till they think he's ready. That said he's got to be close.
