Not exactly sure.
Man, I've never in my life seen the northern lights. (Outside of photos).
Had to work through the night one time about 12 years ago and caught one of the best I've ever witnessed. Has to be the right time and place to see them. If you can be outside the city/town and catch the right time, they can be spectacular. Obviously, the farther north you are, the better.

I wonder how accurate that is. I would like to see them again but almost have to plan to get out to the farm to have dark enough skies to the north...

Saw them once back home, late summer after maybe my freshman year at ISU. Noticed it was bright out the front windows after shutting off the TV (prob watching Friday Night Videos for those that remember). Looked and thought, "oh must be the football game" but realized it was totally the wrong time of year, and way too late at night. Went outside, noticed glow moving around, and figured it out. Crawled up on the roof and watched for an hour or so, until I got tired & cold. It's quite a thing if you have never seen it.
